Christmas Motorcycle Ride Report: A Special Journey to Browntown, Virginia

On a warm December day, with the holidays in full swing, seven of us came together to celebrate the spirit of adventure and camaraderie on a Christmas motorcycle ride to Browntown, Virginia. This wasn’t just any ride—it was a chance to charge our "batteries", feel the cool winter air on our faces, and enjoy the winding backroads that make this region such a treasure for motorcyclists.

We didn't start till one, and the air had a bite, but the promise of open roads and shared laughter was more than enough to keep us warm. Heading south, we wound through picturesque countryside, passing rolling hills dotted with bare trees and barns decorated for the season. I have to admit that some of the houses with hundreds of "blowup" might have been a little overdone.

The Gooney Loop, a well-loved circuit among local riders, offered the perfect blend of scenic beauty and technical challenge. Its curves tested our skills, while the occasional straightaways allowed for some exhilarating bursts of speed. Every twist and turn was a reminder of why we love this time-honored tradition of riding together.

Gooney Loop ended in Browntown. The small town was brimming with charm, its streets lined with homes adorned with twinkling Christmas lights. It felt like stepping into a holiday postcard, kinda

The real treat awaited us at Splunkers for ice cream, a must-visit spot for anyone passing through. Even in the chilly December weather, their Flavor of the Day, EGG NOG was worth every shiver. Cliff had a Caveman Burger, will the rest of us indulged in other classic flavors and seasonal specials, laughing at the irony of eating ice cream in winter. While eating our ice cream we shared our plans for the holidays.

This ride wasn’t just about the destination—it was about the journey. December rides are rare, and the opportunity to hit the road at this time of year felt like a gift in itself. The shared sense of adventure, riding through the valley, and the bonds forged on the road made it a truly special day.

The Christmas motorcycle ride to Browntown, Virginia, and the Gooney Loop made for a memorable December ride. It was a perfect way to close out the riding season, filled with camaraderie, adventure, and a touch of holiday magic.

For those of us who rode—it was a celebration of the freedom and joy that motorcycles bring, even in the depths of winter. Here’s to more rides, more adventures, and more ice cream, no matter the season.

Happy Holidays,
Roger

Facing northwest at an elevation of 2,085 ft (635 m), Gooney Run Overlook looks down upon Browntown Valley. A small ridge separates Browntown Valley from the Shenandoah Valley beyond. Gooney Run is a stream that drains the Browntown Valley into the Shenandaoh River. On a clear day in the distance, you will see Massanutten Mountain, the range that divides the Shenandoah Valley in two.
