LUNCH 11 AM AUGUST 22, SLIPPERY PIGS BBQ, EFFINGHAM, KS

Post by schoolmaster »

Several weeks ago I was out scouting for new places and I happened to stop in at this restaurant, and although it's a little short on ambience, it's full of small town charm and food to die for! Now, they don't open until 11 so you breakfast eaters need to take care of that on your own real early in the day so you can have your appetite back for some great mouth waterin' saliva drippin' bbq or burgers or pork tenders or wings...and by the way, wings happen to be the special on Wednesday! Oh, they do have salad on the menu if you dare. But whatever you order, your stomach and your brain will be grateful even if your heart muscles twinge just a little bit. So whatever you do, try and show up around 10:30 at:

Slippery Pigs BBQ & Pub

RIDE REPORT: AUGUST 22, SLIPPERY PIGS BBQ, EFFINGHAM, KS

Post by schoolmaster »

Today was a first for an Eastern Kansas ROMEO ride! Ever invite 50 or so of your good friends for lunch and when they show up, say SURPRISE, JUST KIDDING? Well, that's what I did today, although I didn't know about the surprise either until I showed up. When we arrived in Effingham today around 10:15, the Slippery Pigs BBQ & Pub was locked up tight and the windows were covered with butcher paper-no closed sign, no message, no nothing.

But according to some local folks emerging from the post office, the "damned revenuers" from the state showed up Saturday night to extract their pound of flesh for non-payment of either sales or payroll taxes! Now whether that's the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, we're not sure, but that's the word from the front steps of the Effingham post office. But whatever it was, it must have come without being expected, because when I talked to the Slippery Pig herself on Friday to set up this ride, she was excited about us coming today and said they would be ready for us.

I also don't know whether it's true or not that the State Revenue officers that showed up actually pulled some ribs out of customer's hands, sucked the meat off the bones and handed the bare ribs back to the customer. But you know about what they say, death and taxes, the tax man gets his due no matter what. Enough of that, on with the story...

I then looked around at all these potentially starving old motorcyclists and quickly started thinking about where a bunch of hungry ROMEOS could show up out of the blue, unannounced, for a quick Wednesday lunch. Well, Muscotah was close but I was afraid if that many of us showed up without warning, Joe Tinker might come out from the back with his bat and beat the snot out of us, so Atchison came to mind. Swanee said he'd wait in Effingham until 11 or so to send any stragglers our way because he didn't have time to ride over to Atchison.

So I called Paolucci's and they said sure, come on over, so a big ol' lineup of motorcycles headed off to Atchison, and when we arrived they had a special room all set up for us. They had us in and out of there in less than an hour and I heard no complaints. That's ROMEOS for you, we are flexible and as long as you eventually feed us we're pretty darned easy to get along with. The only thing I heard was a little under the table muttering that I'd only hear about this screw up for the rest of my life. And I guess I survived the ROMEO coordinator's biggest nightmare. So it goes...

Anyway I apologize for the inconvenience. I know that not all of us made it to Atchison, but I know that most of you are capable of finding your own lunch place without my interference, so hope you all enjoyed the day anyway. It did turn out to be a beautiful morning to get out and ride, so I hope you had a decent ride and great lunch, wherever that turned out to be. But I do know this, it turns out it was a great day to be a ROMEO!! I didn't get a lot of pictures today because I was a little thrown off my game, but at least I can prove that at least a few of us had lunch together today!

Well, as usual Mick and Swanee did a great job under pressure no less. This proves you can't keep a Romeo down. Here's pics of our group that exited Effingham and headed to Atchison with Mick in the lead. Fantastic save guys... Always a
pleasure

After most of the ROMEO crowd had headed toward Atchison, the Polish Prince and his knights went fearlessly to Muscotah to battle Joe Tinker's ghost, but I suspect they got a friendly lunch at Muscotah Mercantile instead. Then a tiny few more stayed right there in Effingham for chicken at the sewing shop across the street that is also an eatery, sort of (the entire dining area isn't a whole lot bigger than the breakfast room in an average house, so even if the food was good I'm afraid it won't be a place to converge on in the future). But all in all I think everybody who wanted to eat found a place and all had great riding weather to boot. Thanks Mick!

I had a great chicken dinner at sewing shop with a couple from valley falls. True she had room for 13 people.
