John O. and his grandson Max took us on a super trip to Monterey, Va. to the Highland County Maple Festival. He selected a beautiful route on Virginia and West Virginia backroads.
John was on a mission to get Maple donuts, as fresh as they can be, and loaded his bike with three dozen
After one of the best fried chicken dinners I had in a long time we made a tour of the vendors. Melissa thought the baskets were way overpriced and Max had an interest in the backsmith since he is a welder and works with IRON!!
There was a very big crowd and the biggest line was to get PORK RINDS
Several of the farms in Highland Cty that product syrup were open for tours, where you could see how maple syrup is produced and of course purchase all the syrup you can afford.
John had selected BACK CREEK FARM. Who knew there were so many different kinds of maple syrup and we tasted all of them.
Melissa thought Rye and Hickory were her favorites. I wanted the sea salt to put of ice cream, but I was out voted.
Of Course, Warren was attracted to the beer tent, where Pale Fire Brewing from Harrisonburg had brewed up a special beer for the occasion, "BACK CREEK MAPLE STOUT"
It was a fun filled day and we are looking forward to next year.
