Dear Fellow Motorcyclist:
By now, it is a well-known fact that the men and women of the Kansas Short Grass Motorcycle Club like to do two things, and they do these two things exceptionally well---eat and ride motorcycles. This coming Sunday June 27th, you will have the opportunity to do both until your heart’s content. For first-time participants, we will meet up at the Checkers Food parking lot in Lawrence, KS located at the intersection of 23rd Street (also Kansas Highway 10) and Louisiana Street. Registration Sunday begins at 9 a.m. and the tour begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. Please be on time.
Our route will be a leisurely pace along secondary highways and paved back country roads. If you are new to the sport of motorcycling, this Sunday’s ride will be an appropriate tour to sink your teeth into the group riding experience on. And speaking of sinking your teeth into something, our meal stop this month will be at J. Murphy’s Irish Pub on W. Shawnee Mission Parkway for an early brunch. Typically our rides include a lunch stop, but this month, please bring your breakfast appetite along for a delicious breakfast buffet complete with bangers and mash, corn beef hash and many other favorite Irish entrée selections. The cost of the buffet is $12.95 per person. If the weather is nice, J. Murhpy’s offers patio dining in addition to their air conditioned bar room. Please be reminded that the KSGMC has a strict ‘No Alcohol’ rule during any of our daylong tours. Day rates for riders: Solo riders $20, two-up couples $25 for the tour. These fees can be applied towards your yearly membership. NOTE: All makes and models of motorcycles are welcome.
After brunch, we will be heading over to the Johnson County Museum to tour their facility and to take in the 1950’s All-Electric House exhibit. Whether you're a child of the Fifties or just curious about lifestyles from this nostalgic era, The 1950s All-Electric House offers an eye-opening look at the technology of the times. Showcased inside were futuristic gadgetry like a hidden television, electric curtain opener, a garage door opener and "the year 'round air conditioner…known as the heat pump. Admission is just $2.00.
From the museum site, we will wind our way past the old downtown Kansas City municipal airport heading northwest towards Parkville, MO. Be sure to bring your helmet along as Missouri has a mandatory helmet law. This route will give our riders a bird’s eye view of the rain-swollen Missouri River. This past weekend during the pathfinder tour, many low lying areas were under water. We will then head north into the Missouri bluffs area running along the river towards Highway 92 where we will hook up heading west back over to the Kansas side and directly into the city of Leavenworth. We have a great ice cream stop planned at an old original walk-up Dairy Queen location in downtown Leavenworth. Very few of these original outlets are still in existence today and it will definitely remind you of your childhood---provided that you don’t know the difference between HTML code and a MP3 player! Be sure to bring your camera along as well as your sun block for the day. From Leavenworth, we will point our wheels south towards Lawrence and back to the Checkers Food parking lot. After each ride, we have an “after-ride” gathering which gives the riders the opportunity to discuss the day’s tour, to compare notes about what they enjoyed and to begin planning our next monthly tour.
Finally, if you are planning on joining the Kansas Short Grass Motorcycle Club on the First Annual Century Tour of Colorado, time is running out to reserve your spot at the early bird price. Members who pay before June 30, 2010 will be charged $100 per person to participate on the tour and after that date, the fee goes up to $150 per person. No reservations will be accepted later than July 31, 2010. Sorry, no exceptions. Mark your calendar now and plan to attend. A flyer has been attached to this newsletter so that you can print it out and give a copy to your friends. If you have questions, please call 785-766-6969 or email the club at sades [at]sunflower.com
We look forward to seeing you Sunday,
