Car and Driver magazine, which in 2020 published a list of the dozen best driving (and riding!) roads in America. First on their list: Ohio State Route 555, also known as the Triple Nickel.

Six of us, 3 Spyders, 2 BMW's and 1 Gold Wing rode from Lake Frederick, VA to Mareitta, OH on Monday May 13, 2024. After lunch and checking into the Wyndam in Marietta we still had time for a ride. We headed north on the River Road and cut back west on a terrible gravel road to Highway 26 the "Covered Bridge Road", which took us, south back to the motel. Roger's cut across was so bad there was grass growing up in the center of the road. If that wasn't bad enough a road grader had deposited all sorts of stuff in the middle of the road from the drainage ditches along the side of the road. The guys were good sports, but didn't let Roger off very easily. :o

WE ARE SENIORS AND PROUD OF IT Or, at least the majority of us are. Although restaurants were within walking distance, and because we become smarter with age  :o and we have no egos, we rode two-up to dinner, and of course, ICE CREAM.

Our only non-handicapped rider had the the nerve to ride on the back of a Gold Wing. He liked it so much he didn't want to get off.

The Triple Nickel is great riding, but there are sooo many good roads in the area you can't go wrong.

After two day of really nice riding in Ohio, we headed back to Virginia. For lunch we stop at the Main Street Cafe in Romney, WV and of course, no ride can end without ice cream at Warren's favorite New Town Creamery.

We enjoyed having a new rider to the "overnight" group, Brian K. He is an excellant rider and added a lot of enthusiasm. Welcome Brian. We look forward to many more rides with you.

The Triple Nickel. My personal opinion. I have checked that box :!: I had intended to ride the 555 north, then turn around and ride it back south. As highly rated as it is, I thought that was something I would have to do. I rode it one way and that was enough. :?: Why? :?: It is 68 miles of "tight twisties". I didn't track just the 555, but I would estimate my average speed might have been as low as 20 mph. I don't know how the guys on 3 wheels did it. It is WORK. Nobody was up for doing it again. Unlike the Tail of the Dragon and Back of the Dragon, there are no souvenir shops or interesting stops along the way. Going north, we never passed another motorcycle :?: Although the scenery is good, if you have time to look at it, the road goes through a very poor area with a lot of empty houses , run down barns and abandoned rusty cars. All that being said, aside from 555 I really enjoyed riding in this part of Ohio and there are loads of beautiful roads. I enjoyed the ride and would go back again. I had just built the 555 up too much. My expectations were too high.

I rode 775 miles, used 14.958 gallons of unleaded regular gas at a cost of $52.44 and I averaged 51.8 mpg.
