JIM THORPE, PA & #9 COAL MINE

Post by shoresr »

Eleven of us made the 200 mile scenic ride to Jim Thorpe, PA. Jim Thorpe, PA named after Jim Thorpe, who was called the "GREATEST OLYMPIC" Athlete. He excelled in almost every sport he played and is the only person to win both the pentathlon and decathlon, which he did in the 1912 Olympics.

Betsy grew up in Lansford, PA, near Jim Thorpe. This is a coal mining area and Betsy's grandfather worked in the historic #9 Coal Mine. In one of the pictures below you can see a newspaper clipping of her grandfather and Aunt Jemima :!: We went deep into the #9 Mine and yes it was very claustrophobic  I learned how badly the miners and their families were treated. Learning this history with Betsy by my side, made this a very special experience.

On a lighter note we had really good food, ice cream and Yuengling. We took the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railroad train ride, went to the scenic Penns Peak, saw the Asa Packard Mansion (the other side of coal mining), and took a tour of the Molly McGuire Jail.

We stayed at the Jim Thorpe Hotel, which was very nice.

As Jon H. so adaptly said
Yowser! Great planners, great trip, great fellow travelers, great photos!

Thank you Betsy and Warren for taking us on a wonderful adventure.

I tried to limit the number of photos we took for this post and it was hard. If you want to see more here is a link to more pictures

This was a newspaper article in the museum. It is of Betsy's grandfather, a mine worker, and Aunt Jemima

One of the highlights of the trip was lunch on our way home when we stopped at the Coal Miners Tavern and Bar in Lansford, Betsy's hometown. To her surprise sitting at the bar was one of her classmates that see had not seen in almost 50 years. :!: ;)

Jon, an expert on Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches said he'd do the whole trip just for this lunch.
