La Cygne Powerplant Tour - Tuesday June 29
Posted: Tue Jun 15, 2010 9:34 pm
Guys,
We finally have the contact and the details to schedule a tour of the La Cygne powerplant. The tour will be at 9 am on Tuesday, June 29. Due to the constrained spaces (elevators, stairs, walkways) we can only take 8 people on the tour, so I will take the first 8 names that post here in response to this invitation. (I will also take a few names as backup in case one or two can't make it at last minute.)
Some requirements are that we MUST submit a list of names beforehand for security purposes, so that means no last minute add-ons. Also you must wear long pants and boots. You will also have to wear a hard hat, goggles, and ear plugs but they will provide all that for us.
You should be able to walk up several flights of stairs, walk or stand for 2 hours, and take some serious heat for short periods of time. Inside the plant is HOT! And when you walk by the actual generator it is amazingly hot! There are opportunities for some breaks, restrooms, and water fountains so it is not completely Spartan. Oh, and you really shouldn't be too afraid of heights - because you will be walking up to 10 stories high and walking on some steel grates that you look down through. Very cool if you like that kind of stuff. Nothing really scary, just trying to be honest here so there are no surprises.
Other than those few things it is quite an impressive operation. The scale of the machinery, pipes, steel superstructure, and some of the operating statistics are staggering. And to think that everything you see was built 40 years ago! Very impressive!
So respond to my post here and get in line!
