Wednesday North Central ROMEO Lunch Ride for 7-20-11

Guys - I just looked up the temperature forecast for next Wednesday and it exceeds what we had last week.
Now, I'm not one to fold up and go home over a little bit of discomfort but to take a trip of any distance in that kind of environmental circumstance is just plain wacky. Last Wednesday turned out to be the coolest day of the week. This coming Wednesday it won't be. I do want to eat however and our mantra is to do good in helping out the little ma and pa places, so a short trip even in the heat as long as it's not too far is still certainly doable if done within reason and precautions are taken. With all that baloney freshly deposited in your memory tank, I think I'll go ahead and call a ride. Be tough, be there! Drink a lot of fresh water, pee some of it out and drink some more. We wouldn't want any stale water still left in there to firment on a hot day. Better yet, drink some gatorade, it's full of electric lights they say!
We've been to this place before but they want us back anyway. It's always been a poor day when we've scheduled this place on our calendar. Raining cats and dogs one time, snowing giant flakes the next. This should be a nice clear day much like it was today. And they had.........WATERMELON!

Guys - I was right about the weather and I was right about you guys. You're tough! With temps in triple digits in the afternoon, it's weather like this that makes you really appreciate the nice days that come along. It wasn't the hottest day that I have ever ridden on but Joyce on the back kept telling me that she had had enough.
Never let it be said that I know when enough is enough, so after lunch we ventured up to Salina. I told Joyce I was on a do good mission. Some of the guys at lunch from down south wanted to go to the Harley shop and it was just north of where I had decided to have ice cream so I was to lead them. Sounded like a neat thing to do to me and it ensured we would indeed be handy to pull in for our treat. We took off in the heat and my right leg was feeling some of it with the wind blowing it off my pipes onto it when we turned west. With the rest of the guys in tow behind, I led the way and took the line of least traffic. The reason for no traffic was road construction. Actually, it wasn't as bad as it sounds. The road had been drawn down to one lane but Salina residents must avoid these places like a plague because there was hardly a moments delay for the four of us. I had taken off first with the rest of the guys following at Gypsum. I didn't have to count...I just listened. Each one of the guys must have a contest to see who can have the loudest pipes. Each had their own sound so without even looking in my mirrors, I could tell they were all back there....even waaaay back there.
I pulled into the treat shop and waved goodby as they all headed North to the dealership. Joyce and I debiked (a new term) and went inside to a new world of eating adventure.
Yogurtina....imitation ice cream that some say takes two ounces of fat of yer tummy for every ounce 'ya eat. I was fixing to loose weight! Thing is about this place....it costs real money to lose all that weight. But so does Jenny Craig or Nutrasystem I was telling Joyce. I got her a big bowl and she scowled and traded it for a smaller one. I do what I can but sometimes she just doesn't appreciate my efforts. Turns out after you get all your goodies, you take them to the scale to be weighed. No put backs...the guys said! Dang! Joyce's bowl cost just a couple bucks but with my variety including a double pass thru on the toppings line, I hardly got change from a ten spot. Of course Joyce had to make some smart remark about my second trip which is where the square dance term originated.
It was good though.....especially the peanut butter with heath bar topping. Boy howdy, I could just feel the weight roll off eating all that yogurt. We had to stay there a long time because the other guys must have gotten lost. We ate slooow so as to make it last as long as it could and I could just feel the weight roll down my sides. It's a hot day was all she would say. Finally figuring out that the rest of the guys must not have wanted to lose any weight we headed on home. One hundred four degrees. In the shade, but there was no shade. The building faced West. Not a tree in sight. No awning over the glass window. It was hot!
Wanna lose some more weight I asked? Another scowl! Take me home....idiot!

Oh, before I forget....we had twenty one attend today with one brand new member from Abilene...welcome Doug Walker. Doug rides a Yamaha XS650....one of my old favorite bikes of all time. Thanks go to John Dunlap for introducing Doug to our group and going the extra mile to ride with him over in this heat.
Lets not forget another one that went the extra mile....literally....Randy Guild another new member from Lyons rode 111 to come to lunch today winning the coveted long distance recognition. This is all 'ya get Randy....if we had dues we'd probably have a trophy!
And for all you guys out there that didn't brave the heat.....we love 'ya anyway!
And for just a reminder to the new guys if nobody has told 'ya.....it's coffee on turesday morning at 8:30 am at Spangles in Salina on Crawford street.
For those down south, I think coffee is at Spangles on 30 th street in Hutch. about every day...same time!
Old guys....get acquainted with one of the new members.....give 'em a ROMEO welcome. You were new once....remember?

One other thing........I have now recived my stickers. One is displayed in the photos below. The blurr in the photo is my camera not the sticker. The size of these is 3 X 5 with black printing on white plastic stock. They look great! They also peel off nicely and can be relocated without tearing if you're careful and they do not leave a sticky substance. I carry these with me on lunch rides but if you would like to get one or several, I sell them for $1.25 each but if you get a bunch of guys together who want one, I will mail 'em prepaid in batches of 5 for $6.00 or for larger batches of 10 or more mailed for $1.00 each.

It was hot for sure as these causally dressed ROMEOs will attest.

All,

Thanks for the long distance award!! This must mean that PCH will soon be knocking on my door as I never won anything in my life and it looks like my luck is changing, LOL. Anyways, it was a warm round about ride earlier in the AM and saw a lot of small towns, burned up corn fields, feedlots, and roadkill along the way. Just needed a MC ride fix as I haven't been on the bike for about two weeks.

Evan and I left after lunch and headed to Marquette. The Ice Cream was cold and cheap and it was a nice stop to cool off. However, the last 30 or so miles to get back to Lyons was really a killer due to heat and a newly blacktopped Hiway 56. What kept me going was thinking of that guy we met in Gypsum who was riding his bicycle from Chicago to AZ. Now that had to be really hot and hard!! Really enjoyed everyones company and look forward to doing it again. See you in Chase next week

PS: I know the guy in Chase and will be sure to let him know about next weeks lunch. He is a pretty busy fellow for a retired guy!!
