I thought you guys might like to see a few pictures from a motorcycle club called the Black Hawks MC, from back in the early 60's. I was between bikes when these pictures were taken, but I rode many of these guys bikes. A lot of Triumphs, and a few Sportsters, both XLH, and XLCH. Notice the non protective gear. LOL. They took off the front fenders and windshields for playing in the dirt, and put them on for touring. The guy doing the ramp jump retired a couple of years ago, bought a new Sportster, and is touring the country.
