LUNCH TUES 10/26 PAOLA, KS
A special lunch Tuesday 10/26 (11:00) with a special person. This Tuesday we are going to have lunch at one of our favorites WE B SMOKIN’ in Paola, KS. After lunch we have been invited to visit the Pecan Farm of Leland Prothe, 5 miles east of the restaurant.
Leland is one of the most respected BMW riders in the nation. He is a “true gentleman” and has ridden BMW’s well over 500,000 miles and I am sure he will make the ONE MILLION MILE mark before he puts the kickstand down for the final time.
Leland and his wife have a pecan grove of 2200 trees. Over 800 trees are in production and they are in the middle of production. I know nothing about pecan production and I look forward to seeing their operation. They have a retail stand at their farm and their pecans are available at many area stores.
We have missed Leland at the last few rides because of harvest, but he hopes to be able to join us for lunch and then take us to his farm.
I hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be a fun day with a great guy.

PROTHE PECANS AND WE B SMOKIN’, PAOLA, KS (ride report)
Today we met for lunch at We B Smokin’ BBQ in Paola. This is always a favorite and never fails to draw a big crowd. Today was no exception and it was helped by a special treat. After lunch Slina and Leland Prothe invited all of us to their pecan farm for dessert, what a treat.
I have never seen pecan harvested and I had no idea how it is done on a commercial basis. Besides eating the pecans, I enjoyed seeing Leland shake a tree with his mechanical harvester. After the ground was covered with pecans he picked them up off the ground with a machine that looked and worked like the machine that picks up the golf balls on a driving range. From here Slina and Leland showed and explain every step, sorting, cleaning, cracking and packaging. They have a big operation and it was very nice that they took time out of their busy day to spend time with us.
Slina and Leland had to be pleased with the turnout. They were many old friends and several new friends. Close to forty Romeo cheerfully rode of the ¼ gravel road to see their operation and we were all treated like royalty. Melissa was very happy with the pecans that I brought home and I can’t wait for the pecan pie.

Another great ROMEO ride experience. It just seems to get better every week. A special "Thank You" to Leland and Slina for the wonderful dessert and interesting tour of their pecan farm. The pecans were a hit when I got home and I won't ever eat one without thinking of how much work goes into keeping the crows away.
