For this week’s pick, let’s ride to Dover, Ks. I’ve shared this before, but for those who may not be aware, I’m posting it again. Summerset Hall is an old favorite of our Romeo Riders. But what you may not know is that the new owner, Becky, is a niece to a couple that we know well, Janet & Tadd from Independence, Kansas. We thank you, Becky, for keeping our favorite Cafe alive!!!

For another tid-bit, this Cafe, which occupies the lower floor of the building, became nationally famous in November 2008 when Good Morning America Weekend announced that the Coconut Cream Pie baked by Sommerset Hall’s Norma Grubb was the winner of their Best Slice Challenge. The notoriety increased demand for the pies to the point that whole pies could no longer be purchased, and the slices of pie must be eaten in the Cafe. Norma only baked about 8 pies a day, wanting her customers to be able to enjoy a slice of pie with their meals.

Angela is now the new pie maker for “Summerset Hall Cafe” or was the last time I was there. My personal and biased opinion is that the pies made by Angela (a former owner) can still steal your heart away. She has earned her own notoriety by keeping the heritage of “Summerset Hall Cafe in Dover, Ks. alive. So, let’s saddle up to go meet Becky and try a piece of some “Notorious” pie. “Happy Trails and hope to see you all there!

Pretty good motorcycle turnout for a morning that started out a bit on the cold side. There were 20-something people and around 16 bikes if I got anything resembling a good count. Not sure I did because there were still bikes coming & going when I left. But one thing's for sure: Sommerset is back in business and it's a place we'll want to go back to again--like ROMEO groups have for over a decade through several managements, lots of breakfasts, lunches and countless slices of famous pie. Still considered by many to be the premier eatery in all of Dover KS 8-)

Al wasn't able to make it because he had to go down to a funeral in Oklahoma. Here's a few pics:
