JUNE 7TH, LUNCH ONLY, 11:00 AM, THE MILDRED STORE, MILDRED, KS‬

Post by Al Hayes »

I’ve got this week’s ride posted as a lunch only, but it will be open by 10:30am for our early birds. If you haven’t been here, it’s quite interesting historically. It is said to be the oldest grocery store in Kansas. Their sandwiches, hot or cold, are amazing! I’ve already tested one of these tasty morsels and I can tell you they are YUM, YUM!! A quick heads up, coming down on 59 Hyw, you will be on a curve that passes right by Mildred, Ks. Don’t blink or you could go right past it.

This is a nationally recognized Award-Winning Grocery Store in Mildred, Ks. The Mildred Store was recently featured in the Kansas City Star newspaper. It was originally called “Charlie Brown’s Store,” owned by Charlie Brown and his wife, Lucy. (no kidding, I am not making this up). Today it is known as “The Mildred Store” in Mildred, Ks. This old store is unique, it’s authentic, and it’s filled with one-of-a-kind products while providing generous customer service by two people, Regena & her husband, Loren, who love their community. There’s still a fully stocked deli counter where they make the famous Charlie Brown deli sandwich. The front of the building is a small general store that is over 100 years old. The rest of the building was formerly used as a feed store and garage. The rustic elegance of this historical site leaves many a visitor in awe after visiting this small town of 28 people and its long history. When visiting the Mildred Store, you’ll see how Regena and Loren have kept the feel of the store and much of the original equipment.

PS: Al Robertson is wanting to know if there are any ROMEOS who are interested in touring the “National Motorcycle Museum” in Anamosa, IA. This museum is closing for good this coming September and I’ve been told is worth seeing for one last time. Here is a link to the museum: https://nationalmcmuseum.org/. The dates are, June 27th-29th (Tuesday - Thursday). It is a good one day ride up & a one day ride back. It will be a 2-night stay in a motel for around $80 a night. Before any arrangements can be made we need to know if there are any interested in going to this event. If so, talk to Al Robertson, email or call him (allen.robertson1@gmail.com) or (785-979-4831‬).

Today we were graced with beautiful weather to enjoy each other’s company. Nothing to say about our warm welcome, service, and the tasty mouthwatering olé fashioned sandwiches just like momma used to make! The “Charlie Brown” sandwich was just what I expected and made to perfection. I think we found a keeper!

I’ve been asked if there are any more Romeo hats for sale, and the answer is absolutely! We are down to a limited supply, and they’re selling fast. Jerry McCammon has informed me that Brad Schoan & myself are the only ones who still have hats. I will be carrying two with me to every ride until there are no more left. So then, here is how are day unfolded … it’s “Show & Tell” time:
