North Central Kansas Weekly Ride 12/9/20

Post by Roadpounder »

We seem to be getting a reprieve from the weatherman this week. He's promising 63* and sunny on Wednesday, so I set us up with a place not too far away that we haven't been to in about a year. So get your bike dusted off and get ready to blow the cobwebs out.

The morning think tank was fruitful enough to determine that we should blast out from the Roadway Inn @ 11:45.

This ride started out well enough. It was a nice day and a reasonably short ride to Hope and all was well. UNTIL, we got to K4 and K15. As the intersection came into sight there was the dreaded sight of a large group of bikes pulled over. Again as usual when we got close enough to see what was there, the thought of an accident rushed through my mind. Much to my relief the catastrophe wasn't as dire as that. It was another breakdown. John Crandall's noble steed threw a shoe. A flat tire. We tried to determine where the offending road debris had punctured it but weren't able to on the roadside. It was decided that I would ride back to Salina and retrieve my truck to haul him back home. Diesel Dave and I mounted up and headed back to town to gather up the necessary flotsam and jetsam necessary to accomplish the mission. Ramps, tie downs, winch and the like. With my beast of burden loaded and fed, Dave and I headed out on our rescue mission. Dave kept the lines of communication open advising John that, "here we come to save the day". Fortunately, much like Chuck's mishap, a few weeks ago, Johns misfortune befell him by a shallow ditch which I could pull into giving us a nice shallow angle between the ground and the truck bed, making the winch unnecessary. The only issue now was getting the loaded truck out of the ditch. Going into the ditch the entry was kind of steep and I didn't feel comfortable going out the same way. To my relief there was a spot about 100' to the west that was a much gentler slope to climb out of. By this time it was too late to press on to Hope, so we pondered where we would go for lunch. I suggested the Hong KONG Buffet in Salina which was met with more enthusiasm than I expected. So we headed there and did our best to drive them into bankruptcy. We weren't successful at that, but we did leave with full bellies. We headed out to drop John and his bike off at home, then Dave and I headed for my place so Dave could get his bike. I settled in to relax after another successful mission.

Thanks to Kai for taking up the slack on the photo mission.
That's one way to keep your lunch warm.
