I had already made arrangements for next week's lunch but due to the scheduling of John Davis's memorial service in Chanute I have rearranged the schedule. Since many may want to attend the memorial/visitation, I have made special arrangements with Maloan's Bar and Grill in Garnett for a lunch at 11 AM. Since I anticipate that we may have a larger number than usual, and there are no restaurants in Garnett that could handle a larger group, Kevin has agreed to open his upstairs restaurant for a special lunch to accommodate us. The lunch will consist of a buffet of brisket and pulled pork with a selection of side dishes for $10. Drink and tax will be extra.

I thought this would work best to still give us a ride for those who don't wish to attend the service and also a central place to gather for those who would like to ride on to Chanute after lunch. Since the visitation begins at 1:00, an 11:00 AM lunch should give us time to gather in John's honor and for those who choose to do so, to ride together on to Chanute to Countryside Funeral Home.
So let's have our regular lunch at:
Maloan's Bar and Grill
101 W. 4th
Garnett, KS

And thanks to Gary, the location of all ROMEO rides for next week can be found at:

RIDE REPORT: Sept. 28, Maloan's Bar & Grill, Garnett, KS
Today was a memorable ROMEO day. We had a very nice gathering of ROMEOS today at Maloan's Bar and Grill in Garnett. Many were there to join in a celebration of the life of John Davis, a long-time ROMEO from Chanute. There were 52 ROMEOS present for lunch to enjoy each other's company on a beautiful fall day. Maloan's did a great job of serving us quickly and efficiently with a great buffet lunch and it was really nice to have a private place to gather for a really nice lunch of brisket, pulled pork and all the fixin's!

Then many of us rode on to Chanute for the visitation with John's family and friends at 1:00. Although I didn't count, there were probably 40 or more that gathered at the Johnson Chapel in Chanute to share stories of their memories and experiences with John and to meet John's brothers and sister-in-law. As a rather unique gesture, the family asked ROMEO's to take small portions of John's ashes and distribute them on their favorite roads as they thought John would have appreciated that. Although it was a sad occasion to gather for the death of one of our own, it was a beautiful fall day to appreciate this passion that many of us so enjoy and I think John would approve and agree that it was a GREAT DAY TO BE A ROMEO!!

- Some of John's personal things were on display. The yellow ROMEO shirt on the table was presented this afternoon to John's family by Junior and Shirley. They had it signed by a lot of riders at the Hub to wish John a speedy recovery but didn't get a chance to present it prior to his passing so they presented it today at the service.
