North Central Kansas Weekly Ride 7/13/16

Post by Roadpounder »

It looks like the weather for next Wednesday will be another warm one. Forecast for the mid 90s. So we're going somewhere we haven't been since Feb. of 15. Not too far. Only about 50 miles from Salina. Apart from the heat it looks like a pretty nice day.

I know this is a little late but it was a busy day. We will be meeting at the Sleep Inn. for a 10:00 departure.

7/13/16 The morning sky looked threatening and angry. My first thought was, “This ain't gonna happen”. Falling into my recliner I grabbed my computer to check the weather. It was like an acid trip. “WOW look at the colors”. It didn't take long for the sky to darken and the crashing and bashing to start. It made me glad that I got the bikes in the garage last night. I got on the phone with Shorty to get his take on the weather. He wasn't very encouraging. I was very close to thinking it was a bust, but I kept an eye on the radar loop thinking that it might just blow by in time to meet for the ride. Gradually the rain slows to a stop and Shorty and I mount up for the Sleep Inn. We were the first there and the departure time was swiftly approaching. We were debating whether to head down to Hutchinson on our own or not. I was reasonably confident that the weather was going to improve. Then bikes started to roll in. Soon there were five of us and we were pondering a route. The Interstate was suggested, but I find that rather distasteful. With a windshield the size of a postage stamp and speeds north of 70 mph, not to mention the trucks that beat us up I suggested old 81 to 61 to Hutchinson. That's when I found the mantel of leadership being thrust upon me again. Leo loaded I fired up and pulled out keeping an eye on my mirrors. I kept the pace slow until I was sure we were all on the road. After all there were four other bikes behind me who thought I knew where I was going. Confident that all were on the road I stepped up the pace and headed south. The farther we went the better the weather got. By the time we reached Hutchinson the sky had cleared and it really warmed up. Pulling through town I found 4th street sneaked up on me and I almost missed it. Turning east I started looking for the Firehouse. I saw a building that looked like the pictures I saw and the bikes parked around it clinched it. We had arrived. I got parked and settled Leo so I could go about my photo mission. Inside I found that we had the place about 80% filled. I had originally planned to be here last week, but I found the south central group had already booked the place. I moved it back a week so not to overwhelm them. I got the pictures and settled in to enjoy my chicken fried steak. They were not stingy with it. I almost couldn't finish it. And that's a lot for me. After the customary tire kicking and lie swapping we filtered out of town. Shorty and I joined up for the ride back to Salina. Taking a break in Lindsborg Shorty decides to stop and visit a friend in Assaria, but I pressed on home as he turned off to Assaria. When I pulled into my driveway I was a little stunned to see Shorty sitting on the tailgate of my truck. It seems his friend wasn't home. While I stayed on 81 and rode through town, he had jumped on the freeway and beat me to my place.

We had 28 riders from Salina, Moundridge, Hutchenson, Carlton, Chase, McPherson, Lindsborg, and Canton with the high mileage going to Tom Slusser from Carlton, at 80 miles.

We were riding Honda, Harley, Yamaha, Suzuki, Can Am, Ural, BMW, Kawasaki, And Moto Guzzi.
