North Central Kansas Weekly Ride 6/15/16

Post by Roadpounder »

This week I managed to get a little ahead of the game. On the way back from Peabody we wound up in Durham hunting down the elusive Strawberry Rhubarb pie. While there I took the opportunity to set up this week's ride at the Main Street Cafe. The manager seemed very happy to have us back and is looking forward to our visit.

TIME....................11:00

Here it is.............. Main Street Cafe
517 Douglas Ave.
Durham, Kansas 67438

My canine alarm clocks got me up at 6:00 this morning, and by the time I got to breakfast I was still in a fog. I had a good handle on where we are going tomorrow, but although I have next week's ride set up I had no idea where we are going. Fortunately Lyle showed up and he was able to look it up on line. Anyway we did settle on a meeting place and time to launch from tomorrow. It's the Sleep Inn at 10:00 and it looks like a good day. See you there.

Leo is starting to put things together more each week. He has figured out that when the garbage truck comes, that's the day we go riding. Well after fending off the attack of the garbage man, he came in to the living room extremely excited over the prospect of going for a ride. It's getting hard to contain him til it's time to go. I had to put up with about two hours of him bouncing off the walls. Finally departure time came and I managed to get the garage door open before he clawed his way through. He does still get a little distracted when he sees the neighbors dog, but I called him back with the promise of a ride and he came running. We pulled out under clear skies without even the hint of a cloud. After a quick stop at the demon possessed gas pump we pressed on to Sleep Inn. The exorcism must have worked. Turning back onto 9th street we joined up with Emory Witt until I had to turn off to at the bank to get some cash. I hear that the restaurants like you better if you can pay for your meal. On to the Inn and I was surprised to see I arrived before Emory. I found several unattended bikes there and after a brief search I found their riders taking refuge from the sun behind the hotel. It was shaping up to be a real scorcher and I was starting to lament my lack of sun screen. Steadily more bikes streamed in and by the time we left we had fourteen. Soon 10:00 o'clock came and owing to a lack of a usual leader I tooted a signal of departure and loaded Leo. I started to hear bikes fire up and resigned myself to accepting the lead. I pulled out and the rest threw caution to the wind and fell in behind me. Fortunately I had perused the map before I left and had the route reasonably committed to memory. I just hoped that the rest weren't following this lemming over the cliff. We cruised down K4 through Gypsum to K15. Within a few miles of turning south the butterflies started to stir. But before too long I saw a sign saying Durham was ahead which put my mind at ease. Arriving in Durham things started to look familiar and I found the restaurant with no problem. After getting Leo settled and retrieving the sign in book I set off to get the pics. Going in for the indoor shots I set the sign in book down and immediately got side tracked with the pictures. The heat outside having taken ts toll on me and the indoor shots finished I sat down to place my order. While waiting for my order the panic of remembering the sign in sheet hit me and I went to send it around. Much to my relief I saw some of the folks signing it, but by that time some of our people had finished and started filing out. Richard dove in to the rescue, and chased down the folks outside and secured their signatures. So I think we got everyone. Many thanks to Richard for his help. My meal finally came and it looked like there wouldn't be anything for Leo so I ordered a hamburger patty for him. Shortly Morry Flynn said he had some leftovers and offered them up for Leo. I must admit that there was enough there for for me to steal a bite so I knew that Leo was in for a treat. I tried to cancel the burger order but they already had it on the grill so I committed to it. Once again Leo ate better than I did. Being a little late I missed out on the strawberry rhubarb pie I so craved. Perhaps next time. Outside I fed Leo his feast and slowly the heat and full belly caused lethargy to set in. I felt like Jaba the Hut. Barely able to move I was the second last to leave, but eventually got Leo loaded and fired up for the solo trip home. It was really a pretty short trip but the closer we got to home, the slower we seemed to go. Finally we pulled into my driveway, got into the house, closed all the doors and fired up the AC. Then I slipped into a nice comfortable coma.

We had a total of 42 folks coming from Salina, Chapman, Cuba, Junction City, Culver, McPherson, Lindsborg, Hesston, Hutchenson, Bennington, Kanopolis, Hope, Council Grove, and Canton, with our high miler being Rod Jewell from Kanapolis at 90 miles.

We were riding Honda, Harley, Yamaha, Suzuki, BMW, Kawasaki, Can-Am, Cushman, and a clunky old Moto Guzzi.

Just a quick note. There is breaking news on next week's ride. Be sure to check it out if you haven't already.

Just follow the signs. You can't miss it.
