South Central Lunch Ride: Wednesday, September 30, 11:00 AM

Post by roginoz »

I've been to the Hilltop Cafe, in Cedar Vale, but it's been quite some time ago. I don't know if the group has been there yet, but Harley Charlie ate there recently and recommended a visit. It's about eighty miles or ninety minutes from Wichita, but we're into good riding weather now so it's a chance to log some miles.

The Hilltop Cafe has sandwiches, burgers, chicken fried steak, etc.; all the usual cafe offerings. They'll also have a special of the day; I think it varies with how the cook feels each morning, but they'll have a little extra since we're coming.

Cedar Vale is east of Arkansas City, just off of US-166/K-15. Turn off of 166 onto either Marsh Street or Ave. C (depending on whether you're coming from the west or east,) and head into town. Marsh turns into Walnut, and Ave. C intersects with it. Walnut runs NW to SE; the cafe is on the north corner of the intersection of Walnut and Wabash.

There are a lot of ways to get to Cedar Vale, but they all take about ninety minutes. If you're looking for the long way home, it's worth heading east and north through the Chautauqua Hills.

Right now the weather looks good: a high of eighty-five, sunny with very little chance of rain, and light winds from the east or southeast.

I still have shirts and patches, if anybody needs one.

Fall seems to be upon us, and the ride down was cool and cloudy. We still had thirty-four show for lunch in Cedar Vale, on thirty-one bikes. The bikes traveled 2545 miles, one way, to the Hilltop Cafe.

They've added on a nice sized dining area since I was there last, and we had it almost full. The food was good and the help was friendly. It looks like Charley steered us to another good place.

Gene traveled the farthest (just barely) and also gets this week's good guy points. He stopped to help another rider who had run out of fuel (not me; the KLR has a huge tank...) and rode to Mulvane for a can of gas.

Charley will have some photos up soon, if they're not here when you read this.

14 snaps from today's Hill Top meal. I threw in 3 extras which I made Sunday, may be of interest to some of you retired bikers.

I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not sure.
