Each time we have been to Gallatin someone always asks if we have seen the "Squirrel Cage Jail". I just got a call from Trudy Barton, the "head volunteer" at the jail and she would love to show us this unique jail.

Squirrel Cage Jail
The Squirrel Cage Jail is located a couple blocks just west of the courthouse in Gallatin, MO. It was built in 1889. It is one of the three remaining rotating jails in the United States. One is located in Council Bluffs, Iowa and the other in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Upon entering the jail, you will find the Sheriff's living quarters. This is the only jail to have the Sheriff's living quarters attached. The first part of the jail that can be entered is the jail kitchen. The Sheriff's wife would cook for the inmates, as well as her family. The original hand crank is still in place, as well as the "grub hole" which is where the inmates food was put through. The inside of the jail is very unique. The door still opens to let the prisoners in and out of, however it does not turn anymore. One side of the jail is still in tact with the bars still up and the other side is open to where you can see and go into the actual jail cells. The walls are covered with graffiti from past inmates.
The Squirrel Cage Jail is open May to September/ Wednesday-Saturday 10-4

Trudy is opening and giving tours just for the Romeos. She is going to open at 10:30 am and be there as long as people keep coming. The jail is maintained by donations, so if you think it is worth it, try to help out.

Roger, The Squirrel Cage Jail tour was great! We've been to Gallatin several times and never knew it existed. For those who missed it thinking it wasn't open, you probably went to the wrong door. Trudy gave us a great historical background and her description would certainly be a deterrent to anyone thinking about breaking the law in Daviess County! I though Bob and Gary might get to stay for awhile but we managed to secure their release.

What a great day to be a Romeo :!:

90 miles from Kansas City and 90 degrees and 60-70 Romeos show up. You never cease to amaze me. :DI think Bob takes much better pictures than I, so I asked him to help me out today. He will be posting later. I did take a few. We filled the place, the food was good, the service was good and I don't think there is anyplace we go that we are geniunely appreciated more than the Corner Cafe. We help their business and they treat us like family. Sue even bought the girls Romeo shirts.Thank you for going to the jail. I take a chance when someone opens up just for us. You didn't let me down and Trudy was very pleased. We helped Gallatin in another way today. Thank you for your support. From Gary's post I know he enjoyed it and I hope you did. :DWalking into the jail I passed this on a clothes line. I think these are diapers :o I thought everyone used disposable diapers and no one used a clothesline :D I guess I was wrong.Have you seen Shatto Dairy products in your local store :?: Their dairy is about 5 miles east of Cameron and I had to stop for a little ice cream :P

It was another GOOD DAY TO BE A ROMEO. Thanks for coming, I hope you had as much fun as I did. :D

If you can, ride up to Wetmore, KS tomorrow. There is a man in the town that has a neat car collection and he opens up for us.... Romeos are good at finding "treasures" wherever we go. :ugeek:
