South Central Lunch Ride: Wednesday, March 11

Post by roginoz »

Sunny and seventy-two degrees in wintertime Kansas? That's what the Weather Channel says for next Wednesday. Hard to believe, but let's not spoil a good riding day by overthinking things. Time to do some riding.

It's been over a year since we've been to Latham, according to my records. It's less than fifty miles, and about fifty minutes, from Wichita. The Latham Saloon is actually more of a restaurant than a bar. They have a daily special, burgers, and other sandwiches. The kitchen is kind of small, so if the daily special looks good to you, it'll get you fed more quickly.

Latham is in the tail end of the Flint Hills, with some good riding nearby. The road west out of town, and then south and west back towards Wichita is a nice ride. Brian's favorite Kansas road is Latham to Cambridge, so we'll probably be heading east and turning south out of town.

Remember to look out for the Leon policeman if you're traveling past their town on US 400. The speed limit drops abruptly to 50 mph, and there's a 45 mph school zone when the lights are flashing.

Sorry to be late in posting the ride report. We took the long way home, worked on my XR1200, and rescued a beached Ducati after today's ride.

It was a perfect day to ride. We had thirty-seven people in Latham, thirty-six arriving via motorcycle. The bikes traveled a total of 2,125 miles (one way) to lunch. We pretty well filled up the Latham Saloon, but were out of the way when the local folks showed up for lunch. Charlie will have some photos (plenty of subject matter today) now that I've posted the ride report.

I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not sure.
