Lunch 11 AM June 18, Oskaloosa, Ks.

Post by schoolmaster »

I didn't think we could match the weather from last week's lunch, but the forecast for Wednesday is Mostly Sunny with a high of 85! I thought we ought to try a new place this week. Although we did eat with the owners of this restaurant a couple of years at the Grainery Saloon on Lake Perry. But they have now moved onto the square in beautiful downtown Oskaloosa, directly north of the courthouse. They will feature their large sandwich (ham, turkey, brisket, or pork) and one side for $7.25. You can also order off of their regular menu. They don't serve breakfast so you breakfast guys will have to settle for the fact that they will open the kitchen a half hour early at 10:30. For the rest of us, the regular lunch time of 11 AM will be just like every week. So everyone get ready for a beautiful weather day of riding and join us at:

Chunkie Dunkers 'n Northside
On the North Side of the Square
Oskaloosa, Kansas
785-863-3663

Since this is a pretty short ride for a lot of us, after lunch if you haven't explored Lake Perry, this would be a good time. Take Hwy 92 west out of Osky until you get to Ferguson Road (just east of the lake). Go south on Ferguson Road (which is a pretty ride in itself), crossing the Slough Creek Arm of the lake on your way, and a couple more miles south of there turn west and ride across the top of the dam (a gorgeous view!). Take the first right (north) and follow along the lakeshore. Keep ambling north until you get to Hwy 237. It's an easy jaunt south from there down to Hwy 24. That will give you a nice taste of beautiful Lake Perry. Hope to see you all next Wednesday.

The weather wasn't quite as pristine as last week and they missed last week's estimated high of 85 by about 5 degrees, but a frisky wind from the south didn't stop over 50 ROMEO's from dropping in for lunch at Chunkie Dunkers in Oskaloosa. I stopped counting at 46 but the owner said that well over 50 had been in for lunch by the time it was over.Thank you to everyone who showed up for lunch today. The owner of Chunkie Dunkers was really pleased with the turnout we had. With numbers like we've been having, we make a pretty nice day for some of these small town restaurants that struggle to stay in business. Hope you all got home before I did this afternoon when the bank thermometers were pretty consistently in the low 90's. I guess I should have found a shorter way home to Lawrence than through Atchison, Leavenworth and Lansing! By the way, we found a great little ice cream shop and deli in downtown Atchison-real hand made malts, shakes and sundaes. Even the cherry limeade had pineapple sherbet in it! Sounds weird, but it was really good. Ahh, just another great day to be a ROMEO!

We took up most of the block on the north side of the square. There were also about 10 bikes parked across the street on the south side.

Apparently last week Joe got in trouble for what he was thinking when he got caught in that booth in Circleville. Fortunately, there was another Klingler brother available this week! On top of his other responsibilities as the "other brother", he was manning the door at Chunkie Dunkers.

There were so many guys standing on the sidewalk, Mike, Al and the gang had to visit in the street.

Shade on the sidewalk was at a pretty high premium and Butch was making sure to stake his claim. Walt's waiting for a spot. Nice to see Roger Haack attend a ROMEO lunch. Really enjoyed the visit Roger.

It was wonderful to see Connie back on her bike and joining us for lunch. I believe this is her first lunch since her little mishap. Now we just need to work on improving the company she keeps!

Larry #2 is working real hard to keep his mouth closed for the photo. Normally we get to see what he's having for lunch. Nice work 2.

One of our two very cute, efficient servers that got us in and out in about an hour. Thanks to the staff at Chunkie Dunkers.

When the name of your town is O-s-k-a-l-o-o-s-a you really should have a fatter water tower.
