South Central Lunch Ride: Wednesday, May 14, 11:00 AM

Post by roginoz »

The weather for next week looks more spring-like, and the wind should be much more manageable, so I've scheduled us for Buster's, in Sun City. If you haven't been to Sun City, it's a nice ride, and Buster's is worth the trip.

Sun City is about twenty miles northwest of Medicine Lodge. It’s about two hours from Wichita, according to MapQuest (I seem to get there a bit more quickly...,) or 108 miles. The menu is primarily burgers and other sandwiches, but they also have a daily special.

Sun City is a "ghost" town. There's not much there other than a church and Buster's. Still, they do a surprisingly good lunch business. (If the food wasn't good, the ranchers and oilfield guys wouldn't keep coming.) River Road is Main Street, and Buster's is on the north side of the road.

You get to Sun City by turning west from US 281 onto River Road near the north edge of Medicine Lodge. River Road actually offers some curves and a few changes in elevation. There's virtually no traffic on the two lane blacktop, and it's a nice ride before lunch. You can also come in from the north, via US 281 and the county road that goes to Coates. The northern route is a little more scenic, and a bit quicker, in my estimation.

We had sixteen people and fourteen bikes in Sun City. As Gene pointed out, it was a beautiful day to ride. Not quite as cold as we might have expected, and the wind didn't seem too bad, even on the way home.

One of the guys reported that a rider from the Hutchinson area missed a curve on his way to lunch. Apparently he's OK, but was having trouble restarting the bike ( KHP had already arrived.) The roads out there are fun, but some of the curves are close to ninety degrees, and they can sneak up on you.

Charlie will have some photos up shortly.

I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not sure.
