North Central Kansas Weekly Ride 8/17/16

Post by Roadpounder »

Were dialed in for a new place in Lincoln. We haven't been there yet, however we have been to this venue before. This used to be the Happy Days Cafe, and is now Ronnie's Diner and it looks pretty good. I looked through some of Richards old posts and found two for the Happy Days. Either I was only there for one or pictures of me were mercifully deleted on one of the posts. Wednesday is their Mexican special, but the full menu is open.

It's on! The Salina crowd will be stands up at 10:00 from The Iron Skillet for the trip to Ronnie's.

This week has been a blizzard of activity for me. Too many things to do and never enough time. I think I might have finally gotten the demon possessed Honda 900 carbs exorcised and maybe, just maybe I can get that thing out of my garage. The hunt for tires goes on. The tire fairy left me two nice looking front tires. Unfortunately they're 19” and I need 18”. Thanks anyway tire fairy. That's the price I pay for having a odd ball bike from Italy. Shopping around on the web through the zillions of tires available, there are precious few that will fit a Guzzi. You would think they are square or something. I may have a bunch of Goldwing parts sold and that should pay for some tires so I can make my trip to Missouri for my mom's 102nd birthday (I don't dare miss that) and then up to Wisconsin to see my daughter and her 6 dogs.

Again I was the first to arrive for the ride to Ronnie's Diner but I didn't have to wait too long. It was shaping up to be a spectacular day for a ride. Soon we had a dozen bikes and launch time arrived. Of course I wound up behind an 18 wheeler and soon lost sight of the leaders. At the first opportunity I screwed it on to get around him and true to form, as soon as I did he turned off on another road. I usually run out of patients just a micro second too soon. The ride wasn't too long before we pulled into Lincoln and I was in full lemming mode, just following the others to the restaurant. Now I know we've been here before but you couldn't prove it by me. I didn't see anything that looked familiar. Ronnie's used to be the Happy Days Cafe and there's photographic evidence of me being there. It must be the Alzheimer's kicking in again. At any rate the atmosphere was quite pleasant with a 1950s motif. I got Leo settled under the canopy in the outside dining area and set out to get shots and count bikes. The manager was out there too doing the same thing. I guess great minds think alike. After I got the indoor shots I grabbed a seat and checked out the menu. My eyes fell on the Holy Grail of fruit pies, Strawberry Rhubarb, so I got my order in first to insure that I wouldn't miss out like I did the last time it was offered. As I enjoyed my meal I kept an eye on the outside and noticed a few more bikes roll in adding to our numbers. There even came another couple on a bike that weren't part of our gang. But for that day they were ROMEOs. After the obligatory bacon cheeseburger, curly fries, and iced tea, I saved a bite for my riding buddy and went out to get a few more shots outside. Not feeling as spent as usual I decided to follow Emory and Dave down a more scenic route just to soak up some more of a great riding day. We stopped in Ellsworth at Casey's for a break. The other guys wanted to go around Kanopolis lake but by that time I was wearing out, so I just pressed on down K140 to Salina where I disintegrated upon pulling into my driveway. It was still a great ride.

We had riders 40 from Salina, Minneapolis, Tipton, Abilene, Wakefield, Beverly, Lake Wilson, Great Bend, Russel, Chapman, Cuba, Junction City, Denmark, McPherson, Lindsborg, and Canton, with a tie for high miler between Nick Day and Rytych from Cuba at 87 miles.

We were riding Honda, Harley, Yamaha, Suzuki, BMW, Kawasaki, Kymco, CanAm, And Moto Guzzi.

Always something wonderful about WPA projects from the 30's. This park is a great time capsule that hasn't been modernized. How many summer events have been held on this sandstone stage?
