Lunch 11 AM, Feb. 18, Johnny's Tavern, Lawrence, Ks.

Although the weather forecast for next Wednesday looks a little better than it did yesterday, as of now it still looks like a temperature of 15* at riding time with a temperature of 19* at lunch so I'm going to plan another close-in central location ride so that you can easily cage it for lunch or if you feel manly, you can still ride. We are going to a place that I don't believe the ROMEOS have ever gone, but it is a Lawrence classic, in business in the same location since 1953. It's not real fancy but they have plenty of room for us and the food is good (burgers have been cooking on the same grill since 1953!!) They don't have a breakfast menu but they are open at 9:00 if you want to have a place to show up before lunch and visit for a while. The lunch menu is extensive with a variety of sandwiches, burgers, pizza and salads.

So let's have lunch at 11 AM at:

Johnny's Tavern
401 N. 2nd Street
Lawrence, Kansas

If you haven't ever been here it's about time you showed up. You could even channel your "inner college kid" and have a beverage at 9:00 just like they do now! The restaurant is located on Hwy 40/59 just north of the bridge in downtown Lawrence. There is plenty of parking behind the restaurant on the west side. And after lunch, if you haven't checked out downtown Lawrence for awhile, you might want to jump south across the bridge and "drag Mass" like the natives. There are all kinds of funky little shops and restaurants to check out. In fact, if you are interested in pie, the Blue Bird Diner in the 700 block of Massachusetts St. on the west side is an excellent stop for a slice. Just sayin'….

It was a bright, sunny day with a light breeze from the north and if you looked outside first thing, you thought, well it might be a pretty good day for riding. Especially if you like riding when it's 12 degrees at riding time. By the time it was lunch time, the bank clock showed a balmy 17. So 27 ROMEOS made the decision to go to lunch, but only one of them came on two wheels. I'll let you guess who it was!! Hint: He's one of the few regulars riding this time of year that doesn't have electric gear! Answer later, but now, a few pics to give you a flavor for the day:

Everyone seemed to enjoy the visit to Johnny's. The food was excellent and the conversation was lively. In fact, the last group left around 1:30, demonstrating that it takes a good 3 to 3 1/2 hours to have a quality ROMEO lunch experience. Thanks to everyone for coming. Turned out to be a great day to be a ROMEO!

Not only is he usually the first one to arrive, he's witty, charming, good looking, and also well informed on current events.

Welcome to the world famous Johnny's Tavern, the original opened in 1953 and the first of 6 or 7 now scattered around the KC Metro area.

Bucky was trying to quiet down the other table because he was reading the menu and trying to concentrate. If you showed up today, you got to hear the story about how Bucky was a Moto Guzzi owner for about an hour, and then he wasn't.

Alright, it's time for the big reveal: This is a true ROMEO, a motorcyclist not just in name or spirit, but a real wheels-on-the-ground-weather-be-damned kind of guy!! When he came in, Don and Swanee quickly scooted over and made room for him at the table, just like nothing had happened.

This is the motorcycle picture of the month! Nothing says motorcycling like parking in front of a pile of snow.

Welcome to Mark Hopkins, on the left. This was his first ROMEO outing. He lives in the Desoto area and was invited by Larry #1. Please don't hold that against him since he seems like a really nice guy. The server in the picture did a great job taking care of all of us by herself for the most part. Allen did his job by keeping an eye on the server, I assume to make sure she did everything correctly. Allen is a very dedicated ROMEO, no matter what his task is.

Gheez Mick, you had us all fooled by your comments for the first photo you posted. None of that description fits with the photo shown. FWIW, in ALL of our opinions. Good burgers though at Johnnies!
