Lunch 11am Sept. 11th Vassar, Ks

Post by bucky »

:? :? WOW.......What a turnout we had last week. This week we will go to one of our favorite places. They have very good food, and can take care of us if we have a turnout like last week.

KanRoad still shows CLOSED diamond on 268 west of Vassar.

Those coming from Topeka & vicinity can go south from Overbrook by Pomona Lake. Nice ride and dumps out right near cafe.

Just a heads up for any noobs (most ROMEO's are familiar since this place is a real den of iniquity for pie junkies  )

Green Acres is the place to go, Green Acres is the place you know, so give us some of that famous country...cookin', and that's what 49 ROMEO'S did. We showed up starting around 10 and kept arriving until about 11:15, starting the kitchen off with breakfast, and the later arrivals started attacking the all you can eat chicken buffet.Beautiful morning for a ride, great day to be a ROMEO!

For several years the tendency is for everyone to be "early" for the lunch rides. First it was to get there 20-30 minutes early and spend most of that time chatting in the parking lot. I also know it helps the business to spread the entry some. But the basic idea of the Romeo rides is to be a social event, as in visit with fellow riders. It is hard to visit with people that are leaving 30-45 minutes before the planned time of the meet.

I agree with Ken that the time you have the meet doesn't matter as much as having the meet when you say you will. If you want to eat at 1000 that is just fine but say so. Bottom line is it's no fun going to a party if the party is over when you get there.

I'd list my bikes but I'd get writers cramp.

Mid-90's heat by noon, in mid-September no less, just might have had something to do with it.

Let's keep it in perspective. Pretty soon the only Romeos showing up much before 11 will be guys who look like the Michelin Man got sentenced to Old Sparky.

As I understood it, the purpose of early lunch times is so the group doesn't tie up the place when the regulars arrive for lunch. Many of us show up early just because that is what we like to do. Some want breakfast, some lunch, some don't eat. Some enjoy looking at whatever bikes are there, some want to chat, some don't socialize much but still enjoy the ride. Part of the group showing up early should not be a surprise Ken, it's been that way for a long time wherever the group has gone. So, apparently that meets the needs of that group of guys/gals. Green Acres has always handled us very well regardless, and they have a great business so I seriously doubt they get hurt in any way when we arrive early. Just my 2 cents.

Who said it's funny? Just offering a perspective Ken. Perhaps the central Kansas group would be a better fit? It's totally your choice, just as it is everyone elses. Not trying to start anything so don't take it that way please. Just my perspective. No more from me on this topic.

Point well missed!

If you were a rider and had heard of the Romeos, decided you wanted to give it a try you would probably check out the website for when and where the next ride would be. You see there is a going to be a lunch that would be an hour or a little more ride for you, just about right. You plan your departure and arrive at the posted time for the ride. When you arrive on time, there are bikes in the lot and a few riders in small groups having what appear to be personal conversations. You set where you can find a place and notice most of the guys are eating and there are many places with empty plates. You get your food and while you are eating most of the riders around you are leaving. By the time you finish and get back outside, yours is about the only bike left in the lot.

The point of this conversation is not what time you eat or your choice of food or what the weather is. The point is that it is plain rude to have an event and then arrive and be leaving before the time of the event. When the rides were breakfast ride at 0900 the guys that arrive at0930-1000 for lunch were arriving at 0730-0800 for breakfast. So the weather, temperature, food preference all have nothing to do with the issue.

For the last couple of years many new riders complain of the Romeos being Clicky. What better way to enforce this feeling than leaving the meeting before it starts?

Any group that has grown as much as the Romeos will have some issues. We all know it is impossible to please everyone. The size of the group will also foster smaller groups within it as it is just impossible for 50 people to have a conversation. No one expects a group like this to walk in and set down and order together, but it would be nice if they were a little closer and we could have the parking lot visits like we did years back.

Been following this debate and must say that Klem you hit the nail right on the head. I fully agree with your comments. The originator of the post made some valid points IMHO. I'm fairly new to the ROMEO's and didn't really want to say too much as to be construed as being whiny about things but after attending several rides I find myself being very choosy as to the ride my wife and I now participate in. We were fortunate in meeting some friendly folks and have even made strong friendship with a few and for that we are very grateful.

Seems to me we are getting our panties in a wad over a pretty trivial issue. Sure doesn't sound worth getting upset over. But...
that is just my honest opinion. No offense intended. Hoser  See you at the rendezvous monday.
