MAY 10TH, LUNCH ONLY, 11:00 AM, HIGH TIDE 21 MARINA, PERRY LAKE, KS‬

Post by Al Hayes »

Ok, everyone, heads up, this week’s pick is one many of you have been asking about! To “knock on wood”, for fear of it raining on our parade, it’s looking like the weather will be gorgeous for this ride. If you have ever been to this marina, you already know that it needs very little promotion. The food and service here are excellent. On a beautiful day the sites you see from the restaurant overlooking the lake, are breath-taking. Oh, I almost forgot! There is a pool available for those who may want to stay to take a dip and bask in the sunshine.

One quick reminder, if you haven’t signed up for the “Spring Rendezvous” in Eureka Springs, AR, there is still yet time. Look for all the details listed at the top of our weekly rides page. There you have it; I’m signing off by wishing you all “Happy Trails” and I’ll be looking for you there!

For those of you who haven't heard yet, a great Romeo and friend passed away, after his last Romeo ride on Wednesday, May 3, 2023. Randy Roberts lived in Butler, MO, who was a long standing co-coordinator for the Kansas City Area Romeos for almost 5 years, before his health made him step back, we were so thankful that John E. stepped up to take over as south coordinator. Randy had ridden to several Romeo RTE's lately and had joined the Eastern Kansas Romeos in Osawatomie, KS today, enjoying a beautiful day and friends. He collapsed while washing his bike in Rich Hill, MO on the way home. Randy's saying was "Proud to be a Romeo", we're proud to have called you friend. Our sincerest sympathies to Carol and family.

Memorial service will be held Tuesday May 9th, 2023, 11 am to 12:00 pm at:
Mullinax Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc.
10 S. High St.
Butler, MO 64730

Randy Roberts and his wife Carol. We will miss him greatly!

EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE ROMEOS:
These sketches were taken from historical records by Richard Kurtz, an original founder of Romeos. Below will give you another sketch for a brief peek at how our Romeo Riders organization came together.

SKETCH 3: There are some interesting parallels to this ongoing history about the Romeos, interesting enough for further sharing. Richard and his wife bought the “Viking Motel” in the summer of '87' which is still operating today in Lindsborg, Kansas. It literally became all-consuming and in operation 24/7. Bethany College is located in Lindsborg and had many students as far away as Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri and Arkansas and provided them with a very hectic but lucrative business. After a number of years of this hectic schedule, it became a walking nightmare, and Joyce, his wife, could see that it was about to break him. So, she suggested that he should take one day of the week off, giving him a day to relax. This sounded like music to his ears, and he couldn't have been more pleased. So, he pulled a 650 Yamaha Seca out of storage, one that he hardly ever got to ride, and got it to running enough to take it to Beggs Yamaha in Salina for carb work. After going through several bikes, his close friend, Jack, who formed the “FSSNOC” (four stroke singles national owners club) group scheduled a Winter Rally at his motel in Lindsborg called the “Frosty Buns.” This was when he was first introduced to the “FSSNOC” group. He loved that group because Jack always scheduled his rides on Wednesdays. To make a long story short, he acquired a '96' Suzuki Savage via the internet and drove to Nebraska to pick it up. He said it was then when he became a “bona-fide fizznocker,” whatever that means.

The last two days have certainly been in the Romeo’s favor … “gorgeous days” to say the least! We were all having so much fun visiting together, and I was so enjoying greeting and sharing in conversation with everyone that I almost neglected my duties as a photographer to capture our eventful day. Thanks to our friend, Kai, who is associated with our north central Romeo group, for covering for me by sharing his indoor pics that he photographed. After the room was pretty well emptied it dawned on me to start taking pictures outside. Thank you, Kai, you are a friend indeed! So, here you go everybody, with a little teamwork I managed to get the job done so everyone can enjoy this memorable day and the fond memories it brought to all of us.

PS: Several have been asking about hats. I have been told it will 2 more weeks before they are ready for distribution. I have asked Swanee to lead our next Wednesday’s ride. I’ll be attending the “Rendezvous” in Eureka Springs, AR. Until then, “Happy Trails”, ride safe, and I hope to see many of you again at the rendezvous.
