MAY 3RD, BREAKFAST or LUNCH, 10:00 AM, WHISTLE STOP CAFE, OSAWATOMIE, KS‬

Post by Al Hayes »

This week’s pick is the “Whistle Stop Cafe,” just south of Paola, Ks. If you’re not already familiar with this town, it is better known and famous for being “John Brown’s” stomping grounds around the time of the civil war days. He was an advocate for abolishing slavery and a “Free-Stater.” He was known to be quite a crusty old rebel rouser with a mind of his own. While you’re here you may want to take some time and visit his museum in town.

With all that said, it has been a while since we have ridden here. Most of our riders have enjoyed this cafe. This a place we have visited many times over the years, they are always glad to have us back. They open early and serve breakfast until 11:00 then it’s lunch time. 10:00 sounds like a good time to me. Weather is looking ideal! How about them 70’s, and nothing but sunshine and roses. “Happy Trails” to you all and we’ll be looking for you there.

EVERYTHING YOU WOULD EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE ROMEOS:
These sketches were taken from historical records by Richard Kurtz, an original founder of Romeos.
Below will give you another sketch for a brief peek at how our Romeo Riders organization came together.

SKETCH 2: Don Duncan was another early member of “The Wednesday Lunch Bunch.” It was Don’s wife who coined the ROMEO name change, but it wasn't an immediate change. It was sometime later before this new name was adopted. Richard kept uncovering lost records dating back to '07', '06', '05' and '04'. This information also contained actual dates of when Bucky (a name some of us recognize today) set up the first Spring outing at Grand Lake of the Cherokees and subsequently a Fall outing (we recognize these outings today as the Spring & Fall Rendezvous). Along about this same time, the name change was proposed by Don and universally accepted. All subsequent rides appeared to use the ROMEO designation. Richard had a virtual habit of always writing up a ride report after each and every ride and filing it after he finished posting it to an e-mail. This gives us an inside view of the early days and how posting was done, long before photos were taken and posted as we do today. (to be continued …)

Another beautiful day for riding. We had a good turnout and a number of faces I hadn’t met before. Everyone is always welcome when is comes to joining in with the Romeo Riders. Large, tall or small, young or old, retired or still employed, it’s all about the ride and meeting together at any given “Watering Hole!” Now, for the photos of the day and “SHOW & TELL.”

FYI: Ruth, one of our Romeos, asked me if I could share this poster in memory of Conway “Bud” a veteran, for anyone who may be interested in attending his memorial.
