North Central Kansas Weekly Ride 3/22/23

Post by Roadpounder »

Wednesday looks like we're in the butter zone with a high of 76*. It may be a bit windy though. Oh Well. That's springtime in Kansas. I have gotten a few requests for this place recently and it's been a while since we've paid Brigitte a visit. I'd better get the outdoor pictures done quickly though. Last time she scolded me for being 2 minutes late.

The world peace summit was a good time this morning. We were reliving many of our old road trips. When I was living in Illinois I'd be gone every weekend. After I finished flying my route I'd unload the plane and my bike was waiting in the hangar, packed and ready to go. I wouldn't even go home. I'd just hit the road from the airport. That first year I did 30,000 miles. How I miss those days. :( I started the year on a Honda GL500I Silverwing. By July I found a GL650I that needed some TLC. I rented a truck to drive out to Virginia to get it. When all was said and done I had about $1,300 in the bike including the trip to get it. After I got her all prettied up I set out on my first vacation in 12 years. We bonded quickly. Over the next ten years we traveled through 36 of the lower 48 states. But the scarcity of parts scared me and I bought the Guzzi. After all it was the closest thing to the Silverwing on the market. Transverse V twin, shaft drive, carry in bags, 5 speed transmission, and most important of all, it had a center stand. :D If Honda was still making the Silverwing I'd be riding a new one. But knowing Honda, by now it would probably be 3000cc and weigh 2000#. By the time I sold her, she had 106,000miles racked up. I bought her for $1,000 and I sold her for $600. After 95,000 miles that bike didn't owe me anything. Be that as it may, we did manage to get the important matters addressed. We will launch from Casey's on Ohio and Iron @ 12:15.

It sure was a nice day to ride. It was wet and cool in the morning but warmed up in the afternoon. It was good to see everyone that rode in for lunch. That snitzel was delicious!!! Yummy !!! After lunch and good conversation, Steve, Gary, and I rode Wolf Road in Grand View Plaza and made our way to the Gate on 70. Checked Gary and Steve in for a day pass into Fort Riley. Showed Steve around Main Post , then rode up around Custer Hill and finally made our way by the back road by Camp Funston to Ogden . Where Gary and I split up from Steve and made our way on the back roads to Manhattan. It was a good day to have lunch and ride with friends. It was also interesting meeting Breegitte’ ….of Brigette Country Cafe 😊

If you tap on images, they will appear right side up 😄
