North Central Kansas Weekly Ride 11/16/16

Post by Roadpounder »

It looks like the weather is going to cooperate for next Wednesday too. When it hits it will probably hit us good. This one isn't too far. It's out toward Enterprise. I don't have any record of us visiting them before, but when I called them they knew about us. And they're letting us come anyway.

Our unseasonably warm weather is working to our advantage. With the forecast pushing 80 and sunny it should be a great ride. We will be meeting at Big Jim's church on 8th and Grand at 10:45 for a quick stop at Mary Lou's house for a birthday greeting.

Today started out kind of busy. A couple of weeks ago there was a little too much month left at the end of the money, so I went to see one of the legal loan sharks to fill in the gap til payday. Long story short, today was payday and Guido said “cough it up or I'll just yank it out of your account”. So off to the bank and then over to Guido's office to pay him back and give him his extortion fee before he breaks my legs. It started out kind of cool and I had doubts about Leo making the ride. But keeping the forecast in mind I noticed the temperature steadily rising and Leo's ride was secure. After all the mornings drama was over I got back home and had a little time to catch my breath before launch time. Time to go and of course Leo is running laps up around the ceiling. I got out to the garage having left the overhead door open after the mornings adventures. As soon as the side door was open I saw a brown and a black streak rush past my legs. GREAT! Now I have to chase down TWO dogs. I don't have the energy for this. Fritz is more responsive than Leo so I didn't have to chase him far before he came to my call. Leo on the other hand, found a blade of grass two doors down that he hadn't sniffed lately. Finally I called “Come on Leo. Let's go ride.” That got his attention and he came a running. Loading Leo up we pulled out of the garage to Leo's excited bark announcing to the world that we are going riding. We're off to Big Jim's church to gather for a ride to Mary Lou's house for a birthday greeting. We were the first to arrive and immediately My mind started racing. Did I get the time wrong? But it wasn't long before Little Jim rolled in followed by others. While snapping pictures I could see 9th street and I saw an olive drab Ural cruise by. A little later I noticed it pull into the church parking lot. It was a new rider that came to join us. His name is Adam from McPherson. Welcome aboard Adam. Since Jim delivers Meals on Wheels to Mary Lou it was assumed that he knew where she lived. Maybe not so much. We blew right past her house but some of the others in trail who were a little more situationally aware had already stopped at the right house. By the time we got turned around Mary Lou was already outside and we were all able to wish her a happy birthday give her the card we all signed and sing happy birthday to her. During the festivities another Meals on Wheels driver arrived. He immediately feigned indignant jealousy at all the bikers attending to HIS girl. A good chuckle was had by all. It soon came time to head for Detroit and the Midway Bar and Grill. We headed out Pacific Avenue to Old 40 all the way to Detroit. By then the temps were getting quite comfortable and I was zoning in to the ride, starting to lament the fact I wasn't on a major road trip. The desert is calling. I made the most awesome trip out through the the desert southwest several years ago. I've been wanting to get back out there to see the things that I missed, not the least is Monument Valley. In the mean time I settled into enjoying the ride I was on. Coming through Abilene Leo caught sight of the cattle silhouettes and snapped into defensive mode, warning them to keep their distance. A few more miles down the road and we rolled up into Detroit. WOW it looks like a really good turnout. There were bikes everywhere. All around the building and across the road. I got Leo settled and went on the photo hunt. I counted 40 bikes with more rolling in. While Getting the outside shots a guy in a pick up truck pulled up and asked what all the commotion was all about. I explained what was going on and who we are. Being a biker himself he was quite amused at our acronym, so I gave him a card and invited him to check out our web site. Entering I found that we packed the place to the max. There were only two staff people there. One cook and one waitress. We sure kept them busy. I got all the inside shots and by that time some of the seats were being vacated, so I was able to sit down and place my order. Once again my eyes were bigger than my stomach. I ordered the double bacon cheeseburger and an order of deep fried mushrooms. But that was OK since it left some for Leo. By the time I finished all that I couldn't move and I felt like I had swallowed a bowling ball. I waddled over to the bar to settle up and pay my respects to the owner. Diesel Dave was just finishing up and we chatted for a while as I let lunch settle a bit while lethargy slowly set in. Richard had his ice cream radar up and zeroed in on Russel Stover. Initially that seemed like a good idea to me. But as time wore on my overstuffed belly convinced me that there was simply no room for desert. I gave Leo his feast and started packing the bike for the trip home. The owners came out and we chatted about our dogs and Leo soaked some much appreciated attention. They thanked us and invited us back any time. Leo loaded up and bike fired up we set off for the solo ride home. Cruising down old 40 I fell into the zone and let the bike sing its way down the highway. Back home Fritz was overjoyed that we returned and he wasn't actually abandoned to starve and die alone. I spent the remainder of the day performing the periodic inspection of my eyelids for cracks.

We had 44 riders from Salina, Council Grove, Culver, Hutchenson, Enterprise, Manhatten, Abilene, Minneapolis, Cuba, Junction City, Denmark, Culver, McPherson, Lindsborg, and Canton.

Our long distance riders were shared between 5. Denny Sexton from Hutch, and Fred, Ron, Kim, and Edward Altvater all at 95 miles.

We were riding Honda, Harley, Yamaha, Suzuki, BMW, CanAm, Ural, Mail trike, Kawasaki. And Moto Guzzi.

Marty - I was certain we had been there on a couple of occasions so I dug deeper into my old motorcycle diaries and indeed did find that we had been to the location previously. I found ony one of the two instances memory spoke to me about and found the date 4-26-06 to be the second time we were there. Denny Sexon by the way not Leon was who we followed back from Waterville and would recall it vividly I'm sure, because his friend and our old (now deceased) member arrived on his brand new V-Star Venture and we spent quite some time in the parking lot discussing it. Sorry I misidentified Denny. I saw a big black touring bike from the back and assumed Goldwing. Your recollection of a previous visit to Midway explains why they knew about us. I have gotten into the habit of searching the old posts to see if we had visited a venue before and nothing came up. So our last visit must have been before the web site was set up.
