2016 ROMEO MILEAGE REPORT

Post by shoresr »

__ 890,890_ TOTAL MILES FROM __65____RIDERS LOGGED AS OF 3/28/17!

CALLING ALL ROMEOs, the 2016 riding year has come to an end and it is time to turn in your miles. I am anxious to recording miles for the 2016 riding year. This is not a contest and there will be no prizes, awards and no audit. I will post the information, if you will send me, 1) approximate miles ridden Jan-Dec 2016, 2) the motorcycles you rode this on—make, model and year, 2) your first name and city, 3) highlights of your riding this year. I know some of the numbers seem high but these are meant to be the number of miles you rode this year not the total miles you have ridden in your whole motorcycle riding career :o

You may not think what you have done this year is of interest to anyone, but I think you would be surprised. I am always interested to hear how far guys are riding or if they just go to Romeo lunches, the different bikes guys enjoy riding, some are new, some old, some big, some small, and most of all where did you go this year. Maybe you went to Eskridge, KS or maybe to Alaska. Please share no matter how grand or how small everyone will enjoy. If you have been to a lunch. YOU ARE A ROMEO. If you don't know you mileage let us hear from you anyway. This is our only way of finding out who we are, what we are riding and where we are from.

10,000 miles....BMW GS....Jerry M....Cypress (Houston), TX

My wife had some medical issues which kept me home more than usual, so this year I only had 2 significant trips: Mexico and New England.

In April I went with a friend to attend a Spanish language academy in San Miguel de Allende. After that we crossed Mexico from east to the west coast for 3,300 miles and 3 weeks. What an amazing country! Can't wait to go back again!

In July I rode up the east coast to near Buffalo, NY to attend the BMW national rally. After that I headed deep into the Adirondack mountains and camped in a remote park. Then I continued east across Vermont and New Hampshire headed for Bangor, Maine. I stopped one day for a butt break and as I was standing outside a gas station I waved at a couple of bikes going by. Well, they turned around and came back. One of them flipped his helmet up and said, "Hello Jerry!" - It was Terry Gessler from Columbia, MO! I haven't seen him for over 6 years since we left Kansas! Amazing! We rode together for a couple of days up to Mt Washington and then went our separate ways.

So between the 2 trips I rode only 10,000 miles. Kinda pukey for distance but they were some great rides.

20,380 miles...Various (see below)....Roger Sm...Wichita, KS

Roger: Here's my mileage report for 2016; probably won't do any additional riding in the two hours and fifty-five minutes remaining in the year. Feel free to edit for length and format. In other news, I finished installing a new fuel pump on the ST1300, and got the KLR650 up on the lift. I'm installing a new rear tire before next month's trip to South Padre.

My mileage report:

20,380 miles total: Honda ST1300 (12,485,) Harley XR1200X (3,940,) Kawasaki KLR650 (3,651,) Honda CL350 (304.) Roger Smith (roginoz), Wichita, KS. This is most I've ridden since retiring in 2006, and the first time I've surpassed 20,000 miles.

Longer trips included four visits to Colorado: riding mountain passes out of Avon in June on the ST, an XR1200 owner's get-together in Canyon City in August, the WeSTOC rally in Grand Junction in late September/early October, and the “No Whiners” invitational in Manitou Springs in late September.

I made it to Texas three times: South Padre Island in January (hauled the KLR down in the pickup...,) the Austin MotoGP on the ST in April, and the Motorcycle Sport Touring Assn. Hill Country rally in Kerrville on the ST in late October.

There were two trips to Arkansas: a MSTA rally on the ST in May, and the fall ROMEO Rendezvous in September (hauling the KLR in the pickup so my wife and the dog could go along.)

I made most of our South Central ROMEO rides, missing six when I was out of town. Two of the weeks when I was gone I rode with the Texas ROMEOs.

See you next year - Roger

2011 650 Burgman scooter...21,255 miles. 2012 650 Burgman scooter...15,464 miles. 1999 Harley-Davidson ULTRA 3,494 miles. 40,213 miles for 2016. Try to find a new roads and ride about every day. Ride back roads in Virgina, West Wirgina and quite often to Shady Valley, Tennessee. These are day rides around 150 to 300 miles. We usually meet at McDonalds for coffee, then stop for breakfast after ridding about an hour. Also, two rides to Florida this year and camping in the city park along the Ohio river at Kenova, West Verginia.
Note: David is now in his 83rd year and calls me and visits every year. We have never listed his guys on the ROMEO website, but they ride every week and are an active "ROMEO" group. David says no one in his group knows anything about a computer  Since he is somewhat of a CELEBRATE among Harley riders I thought you might enjoy a reprint of an article I listed in 2013. Harley Davidson gave him a new motorcycle in exchange for his HD that had 416,479 miles on it!! David is truly a remarkable individual and we are honored that he wants to be apart of our ROMEO group

David Willett & Ole' Charlie II: Coming to a town near you
The saying goes that life's a journey, not a destination…
Yet, it seems that it's in a man's nature to race from point A to point B, constantly trying to beat his own time in the process.

Have you ever wondered what you might be missing along the way?

A lot of new friends, according to David Willett and his "riding buddy" – a Harley-Davidson named Ole' Charlie.

"Most people get on the interstate to see how fast they can get there," Willett said of traveling. "But I like to ride the two lanes…the pace is slower and you get to meet people."

Willett and his now-famous bike have made hundreds of friends all over this great nation, as the two have ridden through all 48 states in the continental US as well as parts of Canada and Mexico. Though he and his wife, Betty Jo reside in High Point, Willett is no homebody and can't wait to start the day with pavement below, blue sky above, and the wind in his face.

"I've been pretty much everywhere I want to go," he noted about his travels, "but I love to go back to places where I've made friends and visit with them."

Camping is his choice method of lodging while on the road and although he used to pull a small camper along, he prefers tent camping above all else. Commercial inns are typically out of the question. "In a motel, you just lock the door and cut on the TV," he explained, whereas with camping – especially at campgrounds – folks are a lot more apt to socialize. As pleasant as Willett is to talk with, it's no wonder then that he would so easily make friends!

Thus far, Willett's favorite destinations have been the Rocky Mountains, the Beartooth Pass entrance to Yellowstone, and the Florida Keys. "That's just beautiful," he recalled.
Oftentimes, he uses Our State Magazine to get ideas on where to ride next.

Willett has been riding motorcycles for decades – his first was a homemade motorcycle in 1948. "It was a bike with a motor on it," he laughed.

But he put the most miles in after his retirement at age 55 in 1989. "I loved working as a cabinet maker," he said, "but it was always my goal to retire at 55 so that's what I did."

David Willett with NC Senator Stan Bingham

Following his retirement, he began putting on an average of 165 miles a day on his 1987 Harley-Davidson Tour Glide Classic named "Ole' Charlie." Remarkably, the bike boasted 240,619 miles in just four years! In fact, Willett's constant riding earned him the nickname of "Iron Butt Willett" and Ole' Charlie the label of "The Bullet Proof Harley."
While his 87 Tour Glide was definitely a gem of a bike, Willett's meticulous service records can be credited as the primary source for Ole' Charlie's long life. With a total mileage of 416,479, the H-D execs in Wisconsin heard about Willett's miracle motorcycle and asked him to bring it in for a closer look. To his surprise, they offered him a brand new 1999 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic in exchange for Ole' Charlie. They just had to know what made him tick. Reluctantly, Willett "donated" his old buddy to science so to speak and rode off into the sunset on Ole' Charlie II.

It was hard for Willett to say goodbye to his old friend – that 87 H-D had helped him make a lot of friends along the way. As a matter of fact, in just two weeks Willett will return to Wisconsin for H-D exec Ken Sutton's retirement party. The man really does have friends everywhere.

But with 238,000 miles already logged on his 99 ride, Ole' Charlie II is well on its way to bringing Willett into your town. He's ridden to Denton quite a few times thus far and is quickly making acquaintances. Could you be the next comrade for Willett and Ole' Charlie II? Quite possibly, he predicted. "We've all got friends we haven't met yet!"

Re: 2016 ROMEO MILEAGE REPORT

Post by roginoz »

A number of the South Central ROMEOs opted to record their 2016 mileage on a sign-up sheet I passed around at our January 11 ride, rather than post them online. I think some of the guys must have listed just their ROMEO ride miles, but we'll add them nonetheless. Here are the results:

OK I braved the cold weather & checked the mileage for John & I. I rode just under 2,000 miles in 2016 on my 05 Harley Sportster 883. John rode just over 2,000 miles on his 06 Yamaha RoadStar, Including going to the April Fools in Missouri & several Romeo lunches.
