North Central ROMEO Lunch Ride for 8/16/17

Post by Roadpounder »

We haven't been here in over a year and it was pretty good the last time so I thought I'd try it again. They open at 11:00 so don't be too early unless you don't mind waiting.

I'm slipping. I got preoccupied and missed posting the departure info until I was reminded. We will be leaving from the Sleep Inn at 10:00. It must be the old timers thing again.

TIME....................11:00

Here it is.............. Main Street Pizza Cafe
100 S Main St
Inman, Kansas

Morning came all too early, as usual. It doesn't matter if you have kids or dogs. There's no sleeping in. My daughter used to jump up and down on the bed yelling UP-UP-UP-UP- until I would get up. Leo just stands on my head until I open my eyes to see him nose to nose with me staring me down. Finally loosing the battle of wills to a wiener dog, I made the seemingly interminable trek to the back door to launch my two fur missiles to thwart any attempt to storm our castle. Spending the rest of the morning to let the moths out of my cranium I started to ready myself for the day's adventure. As my boots went on Fritz started his usual panic believing he was about to be abandoned and Leo getting excited over the prospect of going riding. Both met with disappointment. Fritz that I actually did leave and Leo that he didn't. Richard had called me to come to his house after the ride to see if I could breath some life into his piglet (1973 Harley Davidson 250 Rapido), so I thought it best if Leo sat this one out. Most of the cobwebs shaken out I made one last check to make sure I had everything I need and launched for the Sleep Inn. Being the second one there it wasn't long before others started filing in. One of the later arrivals was John Crandell on his Kawasaki Mean Streak sounding like the “Leader of the pack”. Launch time rolled around and all nine of us blasted down old K81, bound for Inman. We pulled into Inman about 15 minutes early and found the dawn patrol waiting for the restaurant to open. Just a few doors down the street was another quaint little cafe called the Harvest Cafe. It looked like a good prospect so instead of trusting my steel trap mind (when something gets in, it snaps shut, never to be let out again), I took a picture of their sign as a reminder. Finally the restaurant opened and we filed in waiting in line to place our orders. After much deliberation I ordered a small meat pizza. I have to say that it was larger than I expected and they certainly generous with the toppings. Over stuffed I wandered outside and joined the tire kicking session. Richard had ridden his 150cc Kymco scooter so I thought I'd hang back to give him a head start so I wouldn't beat him to his place. Is I relaxed on the bench outside the crowd thinned out and my pizza settled. I must have looked kind of sorry sitting there as a lady who just left the restaurant with her doggy bag offered me her leftovers. I thanked her and advised her that I couldn't eat another bite. Finally I was the only ROMEO left. Thinking that sitting here isn't getting me any closer to home I mounted up and hit the road. Just as I was pulling through Lindsborg I saw Richard pulling out of the Casey's for home. I timed it just right as I pulled into his driveway right behind him. He introduced me to his piglet and I started to assess the situation. This being a 250cc two stroke, it was an Arimachi badged as a HD. Back in the 70s HD was importing their small bikes from Italy. Try as I might I couldn't generate a spark of life from the little bike. We decided that Richard would haul the bike to my place where I had the lift and I can use my best magic charms and potions on it. By this time I was pretty well spent and mounted up for the ride home. I even jumped on the slab to expedite matters. I pulled into my garage, checked the mail for subpoenas, and went inside to be accosted by my two fur missiles. A glass of tea and my recliner marked the end of a great day and a great ride.

We had 22 riders singed in from Salina, McPherson, Hutchenson,Culver, Lindsborg, and Canton, with the long distance being Bob Bird from Culver at 70 miles.

We were riding Honda, Harley, Yamaha, Suzuki, BMW, Kawasaki, Kymco, CanAm, and Moto Guzzi.

We left Inman and went down to Kingman to look at a bike. On the way home via Wichita we stopped on West Street to look at another shop. There was lightning and thunder when we left but I thought it probably wouldn't amount to much. As we pulled out on to West St. it was raining some. By Kellogg it was coming down pretty good, as we got on to I-235 we encountered what was probably the 2nd heaviest rainfall that I have ever operated a motor-vehicle in. Unfortunately we were 2-up on a Suzuki Bandit and the raingear was in the topcase. Cars actually pulled over and stopped on I-235 because the rain and small hail was so heavy. We powered through to the next exit and found a canopy to park under at Global Collision Center and they let us take shelter in their lobby. It was interesting and a good introduction to "the joys of motorcycling" for the wife.
