North Central ROMEO Lunch Ride for 5/31/17

Post by Roadpounder »

The holiday messed me up a little. I was scrambling to get a place for us for this week. But persistence paid off and I got us set up with a place we were at just a year ago. It's going to be a limited menu. If I understood right there will be a choice of pulled pork or pulled chicken and sides. It should be a good day according to the forecast.

It's set. Salina group will be leaving from the Quality Inn @ 11:00.

Thanks to Emory Witt our camera issue has been resolved. He had a camera that he was generous enough to donate to the cause. So none of you are off the hook. ;)

I woke to what looked like the beginning of a great day. Got the dogs outside and settled into my broken down recliner and fired up the DVR to watch what I slept through last night. I grabbed my computer and logged into Facebook to see how many heads I caused to explode. I had several hours before I needed to get ready for the ride. Between the TV and the computer I was able to maintain a sufficient level of confusion to hold my interest til departure time. Around 10:00 I figured it was time to get ready. By this time Leo was starting to put things together and his excitement was on full display. I got dressed and jumped on the bike to gas it up. I topped off the tank and chiseled last week's bugs off the windshield and headlight. Back at home I set the bike up for Leo, went inside to gather up my necessities. Leo is all fired up and ready to go. Now last week I had Fritz on the bike and he's getting used to it and he too expressed a strong desire to come along. I got Fritz contained in the back yard and fired the bike up to the strong protestation of Fritz. I pulled into the Quality Inn and there was nary a bike to be found. I let Leo out to do what dogs are wont to do and wondered where everyone was on such a beautiful day. After all this was a day that motorcycles were made for. I checked the time only to find that I was 45 minutes early. Soon Leon and Morry arrived followed by many more. Leon and Morry launched early as they prefer to take a more leisurely pace. When launch time arrived we had 13 bikes. Now considering my recent run of misfortune I was a little uneasy with that number. I'm not superstitious, just careful. I was #2 behind Terry Powell, with a large gap before the next bike. My mind was put at ease when we passed Burma road. Diesel Dave was waiting there to join up with us. This put my mind at ease since he boosted our number to 14. Dave fell in line behind me and we got to the intersection to join K140. I like coming through that stop. There I can give my bike something to chew on. Settling into an comfortable cruise we were just coming up on Brookville when I heard the thunderous music that only a Harley can make. It was Dave rocketing past Terry and I to take the lead. He must have had a stressful week and had to open the pressure relief valve by grabbing a handful of throttle. I certainly can't criticize him. I've been there and done that. I've had days when it took 2 tanks of gas to clear my head. Dave lead til we got to Ellsworth where he fell in behind me again. As we rolled into Wilson about half of us were already there. I rode to the end of the block looking for some shade for Leo. The only shade available was at the other end of the block and it was quickly filling in. I did manage to get a spot for Leo and got him set up so I could get about the picture thing. About halfway through the mission the cook came out looking for me. He wanted to know how many were coming. He had planned for 35, and we had already passed that. I explained to him that we really have no idea how many are coming until we all get here, just as I had said on the phone when I set up with them. He seemed quite concerned that he might run out of food. It looked like some of us were aware of the situation and opted to go over to Made From Scratch. By the time I got the indoor shots done and found a seat, I was the last to order. I gave my order to the cook and not being sure there was anything left. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and fries. The cook said that he thought we'd be OK. When I got my order they had given me some extra fries and onion rings as a “thank you” for the business. The sandwiches were quite generous as well and even Leo managed to snag half of a pulled pork sandwich. Pound for pound that was like a full ham. A little tire kicking and letting lunch settle we loaded up and headed back to Salina. Before we left Wilson we joined up with Bud and followed him back.

I promised myself to have this posted by Friday. It's now Monday and I'm just starting the down side of the deadly MAN COLD. You know. Just some sniffles and sneezes but it knocks you flat. You feel like you're going to die but you're afraid you won't. Well I think I'm getting over it. I don't have any chicken soup so I'm going to try my best to OD on chili.

We had riders from Salina, Abilene, Enterprise, Denmark, Sylvan Grove, Hunter, Russell, Tipton, Lincoln, Lindsborg, and Canton, with the long distance being Louie Bigler from Salina on his KLR with 128 miles.

We were riding Honda, Harley, Yamaha, Suzuki, BMW, Kawasaki, CanAm, and Moto Guzzi.
