North Central ROMEO Lunch Ride for 5/4/17

Post by Roadpounder »

The weatherman is blind siding me again. It looks like Wed. is crapping out. Thursday looks better but We're already scheduled for Wed. I can't call to reschedule until tomorrow, since our destination is closed on Mon. So tentatively we are on for Thursday. I'll get it firmed up early tomorrow and keep you posted.

I contacted the restaurant and rescheduled for Thursday. The boss wasn't there but they said they would give her the message. She's supposed to call me if there's any problem. So as of now we're on for 1:00 on Thursday. If I hear otherwise I'll post it here. So keep your eye on this post for changes. As of now we will be meeting at the Sleep Inn at 11:00.

I just got the call from the manager at the restaurant in Whitewater and everything is on for Thursday.

Wednesday rolled around and I was getting a little nervous. The forecast was for 70% chance of rain and at mid afternoon nary a drop was to be seen. I had visions of it being postponed to Thursday. But alas, later in the afternoon a thunderstorm did roll through just about the time we would have been returning from Whitewater. I looked at the forecast for Thursday and my mind was set at ease. It was holding. I'm starting to grow tired of playing chicken with the weatherman. Thursday came and it looked great. I let Leo know that we were going riding and his eyes lit up and he started his mad dash between the doors trying to figure out which one we were going to use. I'm glad that I have vinyl flooring in the kitchen that can stand up to the torture of his running twice as fast as he is actually moving. Sometimes I think I can see his paws smoke. I got the bike ready and much to the chagrin of Fritz we mounted up to head for the Sleep Inn. As we backed the bike out of the garage Leo had to bark out to the neighborhood that “we're going riding”. A quick gas stop and we were on the way. There were 2 at the Inn as we pulled in but that number quickly grew to 8. Departure time was just about here when Shorty called to say he was on the way. We waited for a while but it was decided that the others would go and I would wait for Shorty. As the last of us pulled out Shorty came charging by and I pulled out to fill the tail end slot. That afforded me the opportunity to get as good bike count since I didn't take advantage of the opportunity when presented. Being tail end Charley I found I could get a good count when the lead bikes started up a hill and as the bikes popped into view I could get a good count. Leo was in his glory when he spotted a herd of cows in full gallop (as much of a gallop as cows are able). I'm sure he was feeling pretty proud thinking that he was responsible for their flight. That's OK. I'll let him bask in the glory of the moment. Of course we ran into the defining sign of spring “ROAD CLOSED”. That was on the road south out of Gypsum to Roxbury. This of course necessitated a reroute. We stayed on K4 to K15 and south from there. At this point I was well on my way to being hopelessly lost. Terry was in the lead and I put my trust in him. If there's a road in Kansas that he doesn't know, it opened this morning. Eventually we rolled into Whitewater right on time. By this time Shorty was, as they say in aviation parlance, FUEL CRITICAL. There were bikes everywhere. We all got our mounts parked and I got Leo settled so I could get about the picture thing. I gave the book to Shorty and he set it about it's rounds. I entered with my mouth watering for their world famous fried chicken, only to find that it was only available on Wednesdays. No big deal. I have enough chicken in my freezer to qualify as a chicken coop. I opted for the chicken fried steak and wasn't disappointed. After querying some of the locals Shorty was directed to some local co-op self serve pumps. By this time my habitual late to bed and early to rise routine was starting to take its toll. After we got Shorty gassed up I still had enough to be a bit more discriminating in my fuel choice. The Guzzi is a fussy eater. It likes 91 octane. We pressed on to Newton where I found a station that could satisfy my steed's discriminating pallet. Shorty saw that Leo was hunched up and acting like he was cold so he wrapped Leo in his jacket. A candy bar gave me a quick sugar charge to keep me going for the trip home. Much out of character for me Shorty and I opted for the slab to get home as quickly as possible before the sugar wore off. The first sign for Salina I saw said 53 miles. I felt like it may as well have said 530 miles. But I pressed on and eventually I started to see more familiar scenery. I got back home, gave Shorty his jacket back and collapsed in a heap, done for the day.

We had 33 riders from Salina, Minneapolis, Manhattan, Hutchenson, Lindsborg, and Canton, with the long distance being Tom Slusser from Carlton at 120 miles.

We were riding Honda, Harley, Yamaha, Suzuki, BMW, Kawasaki, CanAm, And Moto Guzzi.
