North Central Kansas Weekly Ride 2/22/17

Post by Roadpounder »

I got through to our next eatery. There's a narrow window of opportunity to get them since they're only open between 11:00 and 1:30. The weatherman must be sleeping since the forecast is for a high of 78. But hold on. Friday he's back with a vengeance. High of 45 with rain and snow mix. He's not through with us yet.

Our think tank was in rare form this morning. After last week's odyssey into the wilds of central Kansas, it was suggested a collection be taken to acquire a GPS for Big Jim to aid in his navigation skills. However I can't be held innocent in our adventure as I am usually oblivious to my whereabouts at any given time. I usually need a GPS to find my out of the towns that we visit. We also discussed male priorities. In addition to Food, Shelter, and Clothing, there is one other necessity that occupies a rather high spot on the list. Probably second in the hierarchy of human needs is a motorcycle. Without which we would have no reason to go out to eat on Wednesdays. So with that in mind we have decided that the Salina contingent will depart from the SLEEP INN at 11:00 for our next adventure.

Today started out pretty normally. I checked the temperature and it looked a little cool. But I was encouraged by the forecast in the high 70s. I decided it would be a good day to bring Leo along and I was sure the he wouldn't object. As the morning wore on the temperature continued to rise and as the mercury passed 60 it was a lock. Leo was coming along. With the departure swiftly approaching I went to the garage to prep the bike. After doing this for the better part of two years I'm finally getting into a routine so I don't forget anything. Fully expecting to find anything I needed for Leo to be on or near the bike I was frustrated to find his leash to be MIA. My mind instantly fogged over and I was totally clueless as to it's whereabouts. Frantically crawling all over the likely places in the garage yielded negative results so I started wracking my brain to remember where I used it last. In desperation I started to rifle through drawers in the kitchen. This was during my third trip back into the house. By this time Leo knew what was going on and he was just a little brown fur missile rocketing around the house. Fritz had put together that Leo and I were leaving and started very vocally announcing his displeasure at the prospect of being left home alone. Every time I opened the door to go to the garage Leo would bolt for the garage with Fritz close in tow. Now I have to coax a stubborn Dachshund back into the house. Finally after the third trip into the house I managed to zero in on the wayward leash, and I managed to convince Fritz to go back inside. With all necessary equipment gathered up and Leo on the bike we set out for the Sleep Inn. The cloud cover was a little disappointing but it promised to break up later in the day. We go to the Inn with about 4 bikes already there but others steadily rolled in. The day was shaping up to be great for a ride. The last to arrive were Richard and Joyce bringing our number up to 13 and we shortly were ready to head out. Well, at least some of us were. A couple blasts on my horn quickly got the attention of the rest and we all got fired up and on the road. As we pounded down the road an age old question wandered into my mind. Why did the chicken cross the road? Mankind has been pondering this all through the ages. I believe that I have come up with the definitive answer once and for all. The chicken crossed the road to prove to the skunk that it could be done. There! Mystery solved. As we advanced toward our destination of Hope, it occurred to me that the chicken in question must not have lived in central Kansas. Either that or there were a lot of skunks that didn't get the memo. Between Salina and Hope there were no fewer than 8 skunks along side the road. All of which met with a rather untimely demise. It appears that last week was a bad week to be a skunk in central Kansas. I thought about stopping, but I didn't have a cooler. Besides my freezer is pretty full anyway. By the time we got to Hope the sky had pretty much cleared and the temperature was very friendly. Rolling into town about half of our group were already there. Some were already finishing up. This wasn't entirely a bad thing since the venue was limited and it allowed us to file through. Getting Leo settled and pictures taken I came inside to a very full dining room. There was still room for me after I got all the inside shots. I finally got to sit down and place my order for a bacon cheeseburger and fries, which went down quite well. And YES I did save a bite for Leo. As the crowd thinned out I decided to head back to Salina. It was a perfect ride home after a perfect gathering and great food. All was good. :D

We had 39 riders from Salina, Minneapolis, Wellington, Dalton, Burden, Lyons, Abilene, Hutchenson, Denmark, McPherson, Lindsborg, and Canton. We had some significant high milers today with Larry Suuzek on his CanAm Spyder riding 141 miles from Dalton.

We were riding Honda, Harley, Yamaha, CanAm, Victory, Mail Trike, Suzuki, BMW, Kawasaki. And Moto Guzzi.

Here are the rest of the pics.

Check out the clock faces at the bottom. These are a few that I've done so far. I can do one any way you want. Anything goes. If you want one I will do one up for you for $29.95 including the clock.
